Right, let's do this right

I'm wanting to get right back down to basics and work my way up from there; the last time I checked my hair type I had 4a/b hair type, but that was when I was younger and I want to check it hasn't changed since then. I know I have at least 2 different hair types, because there is a patch of hair towards the back of my head that is coarse, a little brittle, and tangles very easily and is dry.
I'm also wanting to know the basics in creating a regimen, which steps are essential?
