Need Advice - New to Natural
Hey everyone,
I did the BC on Nov 7th, 2010 and I absolutely love it. I transitioned for a very short time. About 3months. Now that I am natural I don't know what to do next. I would like to know if you guys have any advice.
How often should I wash my hair? How often should I co-wash my hair? What is the best products for moisture? Are there any styles besides an afro that I can wear? I have a TWA right now. I am getting a lil sick of it. but when I first got my hair cut the lady put in twists and I didn't like it.
Also I would like suggestions on the different products best for someone who is new to natural hair.
Any suggestions or advice would be a great welcome. Thank you.

Congrats! Now a lot of this stuff is trial and error! What works for others may not work for you. When I had a TWA I co-washed twice a week and that is because I used too much kinky curly lol and I hated my hair being crunchy. I very rarely shampoo'd. As for conditioners geezus I purchased everything someone said was good! Lol. Some of my favorites are bed head moisture maniac, HE hello hydration and totally twisted. I also like trader joes. For leave in I love kinky curly knot today, giovanna direct leave in and koils by nature.
But again I say it will be trial and error and truly depends on what YOUR hair likes. You didn't put a pic son I don't know if you hair is long enough to try coils. . I HTH. I am sure the other cur lies will chime in.

I agree with sweetdrk1....its a whole lot of trial and error! I BC'd 2 months ago, and I'm just getting my regimen down. I co-wash everyday, but I'm trying to stretch out my wash n go's to 2 days. I would start off with the products she mentioned (HEHH/totally twisted is great for co-washing and DCing) but, as she said, you will have to see what your hair likes.
Regarding styles, your best bet would be youtube...there are so many videos that can help you with styling your twa. Not sure how long your hair is, but I started doing two strand twist recently (I put them on on saturday and do a twistout on monday). Also, accessories can do wonders for a twa. HTH!

Hi, LaNatural!
One of the great things about having a TWA is that you can probably cover most if not all of your hair using sample/trial sizes. You can try a variety things (and quickly wash out the ones that don't suit you) and save some serious cash while you are looking for the right product mix. I don't know what stores are near you but Whole Foods & Sephora will give you a sample if you ask.
As you search for products don't forget that you can also get very good results from applying food items to your hair. Eggs, mayo, Bananas (baby food), molasses, olive oil, honey or avocado(use food processor or blender) can be used to create moisturizing and/or strengthening deep conditioners.
Have fun!

Congrats on your BC! I did my BC just one day before you and I also transitioned for about a shot time. I have about three inches of natural hair and love it, like you I am also a little sick of the wng. Like the other ladies stated it's a lot of trial and error. One thing that helped me was to look at the trends of some of the other ladies, products and such that lots of people were using. Like EVOO, coconut oil, aloe and shea butter and WATER! I am sure we both will find out way through this new natural world. Good Luck! HTH!

Re: Need Advice - New to Natural
Thank you Ladies for the advice.
I have brought HE hydration cuz so many people said it was good. I feel myself becoming a product junkie cuz I do go out and buy everything that someone says is good.
I have heard its all about trail and error. I am just so excited to see the progress
So I will be co-washing about every 3-4 days. I don't want my hair to dry out though. So I need to come up with a great moisture remedy.

Welcome LaNatural! I definitely cosign what Falcon Tress said. Yesterday, I did a deep conditioning with coconut milk, bananas (baby food to prevent picking out bananas for the rest of the day), equal parts honey and molasses. Great results after my Bentonite Clay treatment. Just remember, it is possible to have protein overload, so be careful about the amount of protein you use during one wash session. Take in consideration the protein in pre-packed products and the food ingredients, if you use them. Enjoy your hair journey
