The Book of Negros by Lawrence Hill
This is an excellent read for those interested in the history of slavery. It starts in Africa, then North America, Canada and goes all the way back to Sierra Leone, Africa. The story is fictional, but based on true historical events. I loved it and I cried a few times as well. A good investment.

Oh this was an excellent book. I was a history major in University with a focus on African history and i think this is one of the best fictional books out there.
Lawrence Hill is an excellent writer. I also enjoyed Black Berry, Sweet Juice which is an honest discussion about being biracial in Canada.
