Genetics
Ya'll, I am SOOO frustrated with my hair. Genetically, I have fine kinda thin hair. I've been natural since 2007 and I think my hair has grown maybe six inches since then.
I get so frustrated and irriated and yes - jealous - when I see people who've been natural for shorter periods of time with hair out to HERE. And I am looking like I just BC'd weeks ago. It's maddening and I'm about to give up on this.
I don't know how much my diabetes (Type 1, the kind that you get as a kid) or my genetics have to do with this, but I'm at a breaking point. Anyone else with slow hair growth that can share some tips with me?

Re: Genetics
I am sorry to read that you are discouraged. Have you spoken to your doctor? There may be something about your condition or treatment that is affecting your growth rate.
Don't foget that 1/2 inch per month is an average and some people's hair grows at a slower rate.
Could it be that your hair is growing but you are not retaining length? What is your regime? Do you have a protective style?
I am sure others will offer words of encouragement and advice. Until then, remember that we all experience highs & lows and the occasional setback.

Thanks FalconTress - love your name by the way. I am going to make an appointment to speak with my doctor, but since they are not African-American, I"m not sure if they'd catch a tie-in between my hair growth and diabetes.
As for my routine - it changes and maybe that's my problem. I'm trying to start a new one beginning today. I'm going to deep condition once a week using AOHR and try to henna at the end of every month. As for styling, I mostly wear twist-outs, since I can't twist well enough to wear them to work and they'd be frowned upon anyway. Do you think twisting my hair each night and undoing it in the morning is too much?

I second FT post and also I know diet is equally important; are you drinking enough water and eating balanced meals? Also with diabetes are you able to take a supplement possibly (multivitamin, biotion (lowest dosage) for overall body health and see if that will assist in hair growth stimulation? Of course check with your doctor first in any case.
I've been on migraine medication since Feb 2010 and one of the side effects is hair loss but my goal is to prevent it at all costs so I"m really focusing on Healthy Hair Within by documenting everything I eat, meds (including supplements) and my hair care regimen for the next 100 days. I"m transitioning but I always thought my hair grew fast with a relaxer, but that doesn't seem to be the case now_I'm not in the average category (I'm slower). So you are not the only person with slow growth, we just have to help our stubborn tresses :-/
Anyway stay encouraged and know you're alone *big hugs*

Thanks for the hug! lol I have tried my best to give up drinking diet soda and I went cold turkey on yesterday. I am able to get down about 46 oz of water while I'm at work at my desk and I drink at least one bottle at home. I just started back on taking Biotin. I never really noticed a change in my hair or nails when I took it before, but maybe this will be different. I am taking 3,000 mcg ( i think that's the measurement) a day. I need to look up the side effects of a medication I take to keep my blood pressure low (so my kidneys are not forced to do extra work and get damaged) and see if they have anything to do with hair growth. FINALLY - lol - I just started using the Wild Growth Hair oil and I am trying to remember to rub it into my scalp at least 3x a week.

I keep my Wild growth on my night stand that way I don't forget. While I'm watching tv I am always forced to notice it since it's right by the bed. I squirt it in and massage my scalp while watching The Real Housewives of ATL or many of the other shows I'm currently into, lol.

Oh goodness I read the last line of my msg to you and I said and "know you're alone"; I meant to say know you're not alone-lol. As you can see that was an early morning post so forgive me :-) Well it seems you are on your way here with making some changes and thats awesome! I've heard that Wild Growth oil stinks something fierce is that true (lol)., I remember when I used to use Sulphur 8 to grease my scalp and that was pretty bad (the smell). It worked like a champ I assume. I only take one Biotin pill to see how that goes first_ heard if you don't drink enough water (which I'm not sure what's the recommended) you will breakout with cystic acne pretty bad. Hopefully I see nice results from one regarding my Hair, Nails, and Skin. I do pretty much all my water drinking at work too because it won't be done at home (not as much)-by my keeping a journal I've seen where I was snacking way too much on junk and now I've reduced it. Keep us informed of what's going on, glad to see your spirits are a bit better :-)

lol - That's a good idea. I need to associate one of the ridiculous tv shows I watch with the oil and that way, I won't forget.

Here's a link to an article in Prevention magazine.
I am posting for info purposes, I still encourage anyone with a problem to consult a doctor.

Thanks for the link, FalconTress. My hair seemed to always grow veeeerrrry slowly and then stop at a certain point, but now that I know what I know, I am positive that was because of the way I was mistreating it. I'm lucky to have any hair on my head at all after the things I've done...lol. I want to make sure that I give my hair every opportunity now to flourish and grow as long and healthy as it can.
