Share your experience with a natural or curly salon by providing the following:

-Name of Salon and location (city, and contact)
-Name of stylist
-Experience (the good and the bad)
-If you'd recommend to a friend

Can they give a curly girl a good hair cut, on dry hair, going curl by curl so the clumping pattern isn't cut at different lengths?

Salon: Indigenous Beauty Concepts Woodbridge, VA
Stylist: Jacqueline

Ok, let me start by saying this was my FIRST vist to a natural hair salon. I heard about this place from a customer at my job, so I decided to go in for a trim. I called and asked about cost and whether or not I should straighten my hair before I came. She told me she could trim it with out straightening it so i said, "ok cool, I'll be there in an hour".

I got to the address, it's an in home salon, and Jackie wasn't welcoming at all. But I really needed this trim so I went and sat down. She started combing me out and trimming and then started to suggest that I cut it into a short asymmetric style. Politely, I declined. Then she brought it up again =|. Getting slightly annoyed I just let her finish the trim. It looked ok, albeit it was in a 'fro. but nothing stood out as awful. I paid and left.

Now for the bad. Two weeks later, I got my hair straightened and my regular spot. The stylist said, "Oh you REALLY need a trim". I told her that I just got one. She then took my phone and took a picture:

Needless to say, I was LIVID. The stylist went and fixed it for free (yay), but I was just really disappointed. Maybe Jackie had an off day. I've seen some of her other work and it's beautiful. I may go back for a simple style, but she'll never get close to my tresses with a pair of shears again.

Paunchy--I'm soooo sorry that happened to you. When I entered the VA forum for salons I wasn't shocked at all about your description about Jacqueline. Grant it I've never met her BUT I havve talked to her on the phone 3x's. I found her information online about her expertise with natural hair. I called her one day and she answered the phone clearly annoyed that she was bothered, she told 'me' to call her back tomorrow b/c she was out of town on a business trip. I called her back the next day and she answered annoyed again, after she noticed she spoke with me on the previous day; her voice lightened a bit and she gave me an appt. but she was very short and unprofessional---considering I was a new client. I did more research online about reviews for her service and quickly decided she wasn't worth my time. I know how hard it is to find a great beautician in the area.

With that said---I currently go to LaTia at Urban Nature in Silver Spring, MD. I reside in Fairfax so it's not that far from me. Urban Nature has 2 locations; 1 in DC and 1 in Silver Spring. It's a great salon and I'm always recommending their services to other natural headed sista's! Check out the website site. www.urbannature.com

This is extremely disappointing. I was hoping to find a great natural stylist so I could get some relief from doing this myself. I guess I will have to make that trek to the other side of the bridge

Hey ladies, I'm new to CN and this thread is disapointing indeed. I'm growing out my relaxer (in hopes of having my BC soon). Does anyone know of any more natural salons in northern V.A. D.C. area? Please help me if you can. Thanks.

WOW... That was disappointing indeed. I am still in search of a great natural salon in VA that is easy on the wallet. So far, nothing.

I do however take my 11 yr. old daughter (who has FINALLY embraced and loves her natural hair) to a little girls "salon" in Potomac Mills Mall called Simply Spa Riffik. They do a fabulous job on her hair and actually a pretty decent job on my twists. They only charge 35 dollars for wash, condish, and twist. There's one caveat: Most of, if not all of the stylists are basically young girls with "hair skills" and the turn over rate there varies from time to time. Okay, there's two: they may do natural hair, but there product line is enough to scare your hair straight!!! Nothing "natural friendly" if you're an ingredients hound.

I usually take my own products and they do our hair with them. I'll try to upload a pic or two from my phone from our last visit there.

The only natural hair salons around here are braiding salons. I've never tolerated braiding well. So it's been rather disappointing finding a salon.

Virginia Empty Finally found an answer!!!!!!

Post by mrscoutrmmm 21st January 2011, 3:10 am

woot! After searching and searching and SEARCHING the web for a natural hair salon in the hampton roads area I FINALLY found one. I read the reviews and looked at the price list and it seems great! Home chick even does home visits (for an extra $10) and she will work with your schedule to set an appointment (which is WONDERFUL since Im in the military). Heres the website:http://stylesbysheba.webs.com. The name of the salon is called Back To Life Unisex Salon and the phone numbers 757-966-0633 (ask for Ms. Sheba). I look forward to my visit!!
