Headbands = security blanket? Empty Headbands = security blanket?

Post by jessimae 26th March 2010, 12:03 am

Hi Everyone Smile

I have been struggling with this for a while, and I'm wondering if anyone has felt the same way.

I have been wearing headbands since my bc. If I'm not wearing one i have the sides flat twisted and probably the top in a bump. Its been 9 months post (woot woot!!) and I am still not comfortable with my hair not pushed back. I really love my hair, but I feel like I'm not accepting my hair as is, plus head bands cause breakage, which i have already

Has anyone else ever felt this way? How did you get over it? afro

Headbands = security blanket? Empty Re: Headbands = security blanket?

Post by BrownSkinDiva 26th March 2010, 10:26 am

When I was transitioning I would use head bands EVERY day, primarily because I didnt know how to handle the two different hair textures and I wasnt completely comfortable with it. Certain kind of headbands can cause breakage primarily because we put them on too tight, and some curlies even brush edges too roughly to slick their hair back with the handbands. I suggest trying headbands that are looser, and they have the "anti breakage" ones...also, I know some women use pantyhose and they say those are good to use as far as puffs or pulling your hair back sometimes...i do alot more puffs now, so my hair is loosely put into a ponytail holder but PLEASE be careful with using tight headbands...

I wore headbands alot after I did my BC. It was almost like you said a "security blanket". I agree with BrownSkinDiva that you don't want to use headbands that are too tight b/c they can cause breakage. Along with the fact that the tight ones would give me headaches. You can also try using scarfs versus a headbands. I lucked in one day and went in Target and they had a lot of them on sale.

I use headbands whenever I feel that my fro didn't turn out right. I think sometimes I use it as a security blanket.

Girl I did the same thing! It's really hard to break that habit but i managed to do so. what i did is gradually start using thinner headbands. I started using the goody ouchless bands instead of large headbands when i did puffs and such. Wearing my hair in twists also helped. I would twist some hair towards my face so it wouldnt feel naked. I HAD to give up my headband habit. I've always had thin edges and wearing headbands constantly killed my edges. They grew back when i let the headbands go. I still use them but once in a while, maybe 2x's month instead of everyday. HTH..

A trick I read about to decreasing/eliminating the damage caused by headbands is to saturate them in some type of oil. This way your hair is getting some type of moisture while you are wearing it. I did that while I was wearing braids while transitioning. I staturated mine in a mix of olive and/or castor oil mixed with coconut, jojoba, and/or sweet almond oil. You can probably just use the oil of your choice.

HTH, if you aren't quite ready to give up your headbands. flower

You are right about them being a security blanket. My hair is so short that headbands don't look right on me now, but I feel very exposed and naked without one. It's taking some getting used to.

Hi Jessimae! I definitely used headbands and scarves a lot when I first grew out my hair from a caesar, because I just couldn't figure out how to style the front of my twistouts. I've had the front flat-twisted and corn-rowed just so I could not have to worry about it. But with practice I figured out how to do a twistout without any hair accessories at all! I recently posted on my blog (with pictures) how I achieved the style in the hopes that it might help someone else...

P.S.- I STILL walk with a headband and a comb in my purse in case of emergency! Very Happy

Yeap thats me bc'd on the 11th of last month after 5 months of transitioning and was left with 3 inches of hair on my head and headbands became my bestfriend because I felted I didnt look right without one on... So I decided to just grow out my hair with some kinky twists and I'll try again when I reach some length that I'm comfortable wearing out without one.

Post by happy2bcurly 2nd April 2010, 7:24 pm

I've been wearing my hair in a puff for about a year now. When I first started wearing it like that it was because I had put a texturizer in my hair and the top was a little staighter than the rest and would not stand up so I would just push it back with a headband but I use the stretchy ones. Now that I want to wear my hair in differnt styles I can't get it to do right and I still end up putting my headband on. Any styling tips would be lovely.

I still wear scarfs and headbands. My hair is at an awkward length and I don't feel comfortable without wearing one.

Me too, so glad to hear I'm not the only one. I tend to put one on so my hair stays down in the front if/when I take it off. I buy the loose ones that don't pull. I've also tried the panty hose. They are a bit tighter and hold on more than my loose headbands. I'm just scared to let the curls go wild. I *could* eclipse the sun!

I've wondered the same thing myself. I think my headband has become my nappy girl's ponytail. LOL! I've experimented w/different styles but I can always rely on my trusty trouser (sp?) sock when needed. tongue

I love headbands too. I agree that when a style doesn't turn out right, all you have do is slap on a headband and be on your way.

I like the locsocs too.

Fabric head bands.

As long as they don't hurt the sides of my head.

I've also learned how to use pantyhose for my puffs. A lifesaver.

I bought a few headbands myself. I think that it's pretty standard to have a few. Me personally I feel like the sides are shorter than i would like but im working the TWA ladies and building a little more confidence day by day

headbands WERE a security blanket for me until I started experiencing breakage behind my ear and in the area where the band was placed for the entire day. I was fearful and totally thought that the headband "completed" my style, when it was actually hendering my growth. So I packed them away in my closet about 3 weeks ago and I havent dug them out since : ) Im so happy that I got the courage to let go...

Yup, security blanket. And right away I worried about the curl pattern in the front of my hair being messed up from constantly wearing the headbands. I think I need to let go too...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE headbands!!!!!!!!! I have all the colors lol. But I have a concern/question: when you do a ponytail or a high bun, and accessorize with one of the elastic headbands, how in the world do you get it to stay in place??????? I have tried countless times to make it stay and it always ends up slipping back (which I discovered works great for securing a LARGE puff (my new signature style developed by accident haha) [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ) Does anyone know how to prevent this problem? Ive tried bobby pins and those flat barrett things... not working.

I think about head bands too. It's fun to know I'm not the only one who thinks like this!

I used to love head bands. But one day I took it off and noticed how the spot it was at was flatter than the rest. So a few weeks ago I purchased ribbon from the cloth store. I cut some off and I use it like a head band; I can tie it loosely. But when I do, it slips and slides all day!! Today I tied it more tightly; I felt like feeling cute.

I used the head band today so I could try to stop my hair from always being parted in the middle.

I LOOOOOOOVE headbands too..I just did my BC 3 weeks ago and have been wearing headbands majority of the time..the front of my hair can do some funky stuff in the morning and I'm in college so throwing on a headband is definitely a quick fix...but I use the thick headbands not the lil elastic ones..

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

are these headbands safe for my edges??? they aren't tight and pretty much just lay on top of them so they should be alright???

Since my BC, headbands have become my friend, and I dont wear the hard headband but the elastic ones. Since my hair is so short i dont kno what else to do with it, and I think it make my twist and fro look a little bit better. Plus I'm more comfortable with my headband, so yea it is my security blanket, but I do want to try the fabric headbands and the one with the bows on them as well Laughing
