I did it!!
ok, so after stalking blogs and doing research i finally popped my henna cherry this weekend and I can say that I am very pleased!! I have to say that it felt very heavy on my head and i was getting a headache so i only left it in for about 4.5 hours... afterward i deep conditioned with the generic biolage conditioner which is sooo flippin thick i couldn't believe it...
anywho i bought henna from a store in manhattan that aBailey suggested but i bought the bag that the store packages and the Jamila for my friend who wants to try it... I mixed a cup of henna with lemon juice until i got a yogurt-like texture and let it sit overnight and applied it in the a.m.
I know I didn't get all of it rinsed out, because when I was twisting my hair I felt some grains, but I don't really care cuz you can't see it... my hair feels soft and i can't explain it, but it looks different too
I'm thinking that I may do it again this week since I'm getting braids over the weekend and won't be able to henna for the next couple of weeks... I may tweek the recipe a smidge, but i doubt it...

Re: I did it!!
I'm glad you liked it ! I Went without henna so long ... And now I've been henna'ing every week so my $1.99 stash is running low. I might try the stores "brand" of henna. Was it a lot if grit? How was the wash out? What's your hair type/ did ur pattern change any?
Since I'm down to one box of Jamila henna . I only did a henna gloss this weekend.
Henna gloss: 3 large spoon fulls of henna, cup or so of suave humectant conditioner, olive oil, melted Shea and a banana( smelled good bad idea rinsing was hard)
i was in love with all those shops I wann try vatika oil next

Re: I did it!!
The grit wasn't too bad, it was fairly easy to rinse out, but I probably should have stayed under the water a lil longer... I bought the $4 bag and only used about half of it, so the other half I'll use later this week...
and I've tried to understand the whole hair typing, but I would say I have very tightly coiled cotton-like hair texture so I experience major shrinkage and a lot of ssk's... but my curls loosened noticeably to me and was softer to comb out than normal

Have you checked around where you live for an Indian store? I don't think any online stores have cheap henna, but this is where I used to get my before I moved to Houston http://www.mehandi.com/shop/hairhenna.html. Its not that cheap, but its good quality henna.

I live in Houston also. What area are you in? I have seen quite a few Indian grocery stores. The one nearest me (that I got henna from) is on hwy 6 in Missouri City.

Simplest way to find one is to either google "Indian grocery stores Houston", or just go to an Indian restaurant and ask them where the nearest Indian grocery store is. In a big city like Houston, there are quite a few. I live near Hwy 6, so that one is more convenient for me.

go to the Mahatma Gandhi district in sw houston (610 north to 59, exit hillcroft) there is an indian grocery store (the one i go to) in a plaza right after you cross hillcroft to the right off the feeder. There is usually a middle aged indian man in there just ask him and he'll give you all your henna options. He's really excited and has said that henna has become very popular in the African American community as an alternative for color. If there are any women in the store you can always ask them what their mixtures are and my experience has been that they are very happy to help (it might be broken english and a tour of the store to locate product but its worth it). Theyre also very happy to show off their hair a couple of women unbraided and unbound their hair (they wear a lot of protective styles usually a pony or long braid in the back) and let you feel. I know there are tons of recipes and website that give tons of info but when i see a woman (black white indian asian) who is using and possibly has mastered a technique im interested in i dont hesitate to ask
