Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey Empty Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey

Post by d.denise 20th November 2009, 1:50 am

Just started this book! Has anyone else ready it? My coworker gave it to me as a gift because it has pretty much changed her life. Her and her husband have completely paid off their student loans and will be able to pay for their down pmt on their home in cash (the traditional 20% not the 5% we're used to now) and they don't use credit cards anymore.

It's not a novel or anything but it's definitely a quick read because I just started and CAN NOT put it down. It's definitely one of those books that you refer to again and again. The theme of the book is if you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else. So if you sacrifice just a little for a short period of time, you will be in a much better financial situation in as little as a year or two. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses because they are really broke lol - in lots of credit card debt.

My co-worker also follows his method and I hear it is pretty good. What's the name of the book?

I have this book also. I purchased it after attending one of his mini workshops at a local church. Honestly, I haven't completed the book. I attribute that to my ADHD. Ha! I have a habit of starting and stopping then moving onto the next one when it comes to books but I'm going to pick this one up again for sure. It's method is sensible and very beneficial. I've implemented a few already. Ex-hubby left me with some reminders of him...DEBT. Ha! Gotta get rid of it.

Total money makeover is the name of it

And naturallydestined I am the SAME way when it comes to reading! I will be in the middle of a book and then see something else or get a recommendation and then its a wrap! And most of the time I don't go back to the first book lol. I have a list of about 10 books on hold at the library at any given moment! It has to be really engaging for me to finish one in its entirety

Happy Reading!

Done!!

I finished this book in less than a week. with a couple of days of non-reading so what does that tell you??? GO BUY THIS BOOK! If you are in debt, or have a mortgage that you don't think can be paid off in the next few years, or just don't see yourself being wealthy on an agerage income, go buy this book!

I have never had serious debt trouble, but the little debt and bills that I pay every month could have EASILY been paid off. I will pay all of them off THIS WEEK so I can begin the next "baby steps" as he calls them. And considering the fact that I want to get my Master's next year, I need to be able to either pay cash for it, get some scholarships, or realize it's worth the wait - a loan is NOT an option...

some of the best parts of the book is how he debunks (did I really just use that word??? lol) credit myths and really breaks it down plain and simple.

The average American will have over $2 MILLION dollars go through their hands through their lifetime and what do we have to show for it at retirement??? Most retirees cannot write you a check for $600 because they are depending on social security or some other fixed income.... Man I could keep writing, but I'm not.

On to the next one..... lol.

This is an excellent book. I have read it and we have implemented some of his principles. He's also on the radio and there are classes you can take. It's funny how my co-workers react when I say we don't have any credit cards, they act as if you can't buy ANYTHING with out one or that the EMERGENCY will come up and you will be lost without one.

You have to change your perspective, and I understand that there are day to day things must be paid for, but I'm ready to work to pay myself.

so true! changing your perspective is the key.

it's not that we have been brainwashed its just that we simply don't think theres any other way to live. i'm trying to pay ME too! My issue is I'm supposed to go to grad school next year so I need to come up with some money to pay for that lol.

Great system by Dave Ramsey. Took the financial peace university class with my husband at our church and it has completely transformed our lives. Highly recommend it!

Just this year, we've paid off two vehicles, two credit cards, and a few other crazy bills totaling over 30,000. And trust, we did not have that in the bank. It was just using what we did have (I'm the only one working) and learning to let our money work for and not against us. We only have student loans left which should be done by the end of next year, working on building our emergency fund back up and getting our 20% for a down payment for a house.

It's not an easy plan to live by and takes complete discipline from both parties but you can see the results firsthand and on paper and know that in the end, you'll be living like no one else because you've lived like no one else!

I always watch Dave on Saturday night. I plan to get the book this weekend and read it while I am on vacation for Christmas. We can def use some help in the finance department. I would LOVE to take his Fianacial Peace class as well.

Thanks ladies for this great insight.

I have this book but haven't read it yet. My husband and I went to one of Dave Ramsey's seminars and got the whole Financial Peace University kit. We've listened to all the CD's and the whole program is great! We followed it for a good while, until some unexpected financial thing happened and then we got off track. We've been on and off since then.
I do listen to his radio show when I catch it.

I got the book when i went to his seminar a year or so ago. It makes a lot of practical sense. I was doing great this time last year but fell off the band wagon.
