Share your experience with a natural or curly salon by providing the following:

-Name of Salon and location (city, and contact)
-Name of stylist
-Experience (the good and the bad)
-If you'd recommend to a friend

Can they give a curly girl a good hair cut, on dry hair, going curl by curl so the clumping pattern isn't cut at different lengths?

Name of Salon: Reflections
Location: 1200 Hall St SE Grand Rapids, MI 49506 616-243-6748
Stylist: Vicki

I called on a Thursday to ask questions mostly, I wanted to find someone who was used to working with natural hair, and used good products. I've been nervous to straighten my hair, but I have a abundance of ssk's and was having a hard time finding them to snip them in my curly state. I also was really curious about my length since it's been over a year now.

I called and asked about a natural stylist, She said that i was speaking with her, and that her. SO began to ask her questions about the products she uses, I tell her that there are some things that I avoid using, Such as parabens and SLS's. She said that she has a line that she uses that avoids such things, however, I could always bring in my own products. (win!) I asked about a trim and a wash, then just decided I would go for the whole style thing. She quoted me $40 since I was a new customer.
She had me won, I booked a appointment for Friday at noon. Stressing I needed to be out by 2 for work. She said "No problem".

I arrived the next day 5 minutes before my appointment, The salon is nice! Lots of stations where people were getting cuts, styles, Braids, Twists... Weaves, They even have a dedicated Barbershop in the back of the building.

I spoke with Vicki, she was a nice lady, we talked about styles and I settled for just a simple straightening with a bump. Something easy to wrap at night. She was finishing up her last person. and said she would be with me.

From that point it got kinda iffy. It took 10 minutes to get me washed and deep conditioner on. She threw me under the dryer for about a half hour. Then telling me she was running a little behind, but I should be okay.
Half hour goes by, she rinses me, then tells me to hang out, she had to wash another woman and then she would blow me out.
I sat for 20 minutes in a towel before she got to me. In that 20 minutes she rotated between 2 other women. Finally, another stylist blew me out. She was very kind with my hair, detangled gently and didn't use a lot of heat. first hurdle crossed!
After that I sat another 20-30 minutes looking absolutely crazy. Good thing my mother came with me to keep me company. It was now 1:30, I kept looking to her, she said she would have me out soon. 2:00 came, I was late, and upset. BUT i stuck it out.
Finally she got to me, She hot combed/ Flat ironed my hair. She did a good job overall, Though half way through she mentioned how thick my hair was, and how it holds heat. I nodded, but didn't think much of it.

She gave me a good trim and handed me the mirror, It looked great! Soft, had a sheen to it, ends looked healthy. I was happy, even though now it was 3pm and I was a hour late to work.

When I hopped up she told me the price.. Im thinking 40. No, like 47.
I mentioned the new customer price, but she quickly added it was because my hair was a lot thicker. I looked at the clock and pointed out I was supposed to be out by 1..1:30 at the latest and she said sorry, but the price remained the same.

I was happy because my hair looked good, but pissed about the time. Even with that, I was going to give her a tip. After that though? No. she'd already added her tip on.

Would I recommend to a friend: Eh...I would, but I'd tell her not to be in a rush, and bring 10 extra, just incase.

Does anyone know of any good natural salons in the metro-Detroit area? I'm a long-term transitioner, who has pretty much just been doing braidouts. I'm going home to da D for Christmas and my mother thought it would be nice if I got my twists professionally done this year.

This response is late but It's not Christmas yet! I recently went to Happy to Be Nappy on Livernois. I'd heard this salon mentioned a lot in natural talk and I only went cuz my normal guy located on the Eastside cancelled on me. I thought the interior was a bit rundown I was expecting nicer. I was also expecting to see more natural hair on the stylist but the day I was in there was a lot of weaves and ponytails. I just went in to have my fro picked out and my ends trimmed. I saw a girl named Tanesha she did a pretty good job but I think I'll stick to my other barber but he is as I just said a barber where as she was speaking about many other styles of twist she was wondering if I was interested in trying and for that I may go back to her to see how it comes out. As for the other salon I go to it is called Textures by Nefertiti downtown in the midtown area another that comes up alot in natural talk in detroit the salon is small but very nice and profession (from me experience) Again I only had my hair picked out and trimmed by Daniel but he did a great job. There are locktitians(sp) there that do other styles so you can probably get some twists done there.

When that was long winded hope it helps :-)

I'm in desperate need of a natural salon that can color my hair, trim my ends, and straighten it for my birthday in May! I hope I won't have to go to 3 different places! Any help and ideas will be greatly appreciated!
