Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
Today, I wanted a break from gel and I used my homemade spritz as my leave in and then rubbed in some jojoba oil. My hair is no longer sopping wet and one thing I love about this look is that there is still a sheen and moisturized look to it. And of course I realize this is because I sealed my hair with oil.
I have a TWA so wash n gos are my staples and the times that I choose to use a gel, when do you seal your hair with oil?
My normal process with a WnG is:
So my question is, if I wanted to apply oil to seal in the moisture, would I do it before step 4 and after step 3? Does anyone that uses KCCC or eco styler ever tried to seal their hair with oil before applying the gel? I can only imagine how the KCCC would react to such a thing!

My normal process with a WnG is:
- get out of shower with dripping wet hair.
- spray my homemade spritz
- add another moisturizer if I want to (leave in conditioner, curls milkshake, a little bit of conditioner)
- apply gel (KCCC or eco styler) to my hair.

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
I just did my first WnG and I sealed my hair with oil before I apply the ecostyler gel. It's been an hour so far and it's good...

I don't use gels on my WNGs but I read to apply the oil first then your gel. This application probably attributes to a softer feel than not utilizing any type of sealant and then your hair becomes crunchy and dry. I've use my Giovanni Direct with Curls Souffle and castor oil or with with Nexxus' Allure Curls styler mixed with castor oil.

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
@hamptonsfnst... just to be clear... when you use your giovanni direct with curls souffle and castor oil, it goes:
1. giovanni direct leave in
2. castor oil
3. curls souffle
or is the castor oil and culs souffle switched? I ask b/c I own curls souffle too! Thanks!

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
Jamaica, I do this: Giovanni, Curls souffle and seal with the castor oil. Because of this I experienced hand in hair syndrome because I'm impressed by how soft and defined my second day hair is with yesterday's WNG. I can't stop playing with my coils.

I like to seal with oil before applying KCCC and have not had any problems with it so far.

@raymingy, that is GOOD news about the KCCC and no problems... that gel seems to be finnicky with alot of stuff. What oil do you use?
Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
When I wash-n-go, I seal with shea butter and astor oil, THEN apply the KCC or Afroveda PUR Whipped Gelly. I get both defi ition and softness that way.
Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
I've used olive oil and my shea butter mix (on separate occasions) after reading about it on LadyMika's [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] blog a little while ago. I will apply KCKT then oil or the mix then the KCCC.

@RayMingy: Yep, "J" stands for "Junk" because something's always wrong with it. That train is straight GARBAGE BAG. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Well, it IS until you hit Myrtle Ave, and then it gets nicer for all the hipsters who are creeping south of Broadway. BUT, that's a discussion for another forum. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
question i have tried to attempt a WnG on several occasions. 1- i tired KCCC and got a mini jerry curl and then crunchy mess the next day. 2-tried the eco styler but again a crunchy mess 3. tried on with aloe vera gel...so my question does anyone know the correct process or could it just be my hair? my hair is wonderful when its wet or with the conditioner on it once it drys its a crunchy mess, lol, any advice would be helpful

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
hmm... well a couple questions first @naturalchic... tell us your exact process. What else are you putting on your hair?
From the onset, I can say (b/c I've been there) that when you use too much KCCC- you do get a jheri curl look which doesn't sound like the look you're going for.

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
For all of my wash'n'go's I use my own leave-in of glycerin and aloe. I love KCCC, but the trick is to find the right leave-in for you and to only use enough for your hair to get the right about of control and curl definition. If you use too much and you get crunchy you can spritz and then seal with a light oil. I've even used my leave-in. Some ladies scrunch out the crunchiness.
But I agree with the other sister...tell us your process.

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
This thread is extremely helpful. Now, when I use eco, kccc or pur whipped gelly, I will put the oil on first before applying any gel. Hopefully, my hair won't be too crunchy. Thanks, Ladies!

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
For me, oil is always the last thing I apply, if I put it on before the elasta QP Feels like Silk, it won't penetrate through the oil and I get a frizzier result.

Thanks Blondie for chiming in! I was about to go to your thread to look for your process. I'm interested in your layering technique.
Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
Blondie, I just got back from going to Sally's to find the ElasticQP Feels Like Silk. They didn't have it. But I'm going on a mission tomorrow.
Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
I was just wondering about this. I have been using the conditioner only method and my hair seems to be doing well but I was wondering if it's necessary for me to seal with oil??
And if so I don't know how to do it without disrupting my curls .. can i put the oil in a spray bottle? Maybe a mixture of water, aloe vera juice, and oil??

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
You can do that S4pphir3. I am a faithful CO curly! And I seal with oils as well...when I do seal. If I don't do it the day I do my hair I'll do it that night or the next day when I spritz to refresh my curls and then apply a bit of oil to my ends. You can focus on your ends or you can run the oil over the length of your hair. My spritz does have a bit of oil in it, but I still take some oil and seal in the moisture.
Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
Sorry for the delay,
@jamaicanmecurly- i usually put wash and condition my hair then apply giovanni leave in, then add the gel on top....when i used the kccc i used the knot today first then the kccc, i may have used to much but i tried it 3 diff times with the same results.
@SisterBoyd- what do you mean you use cond only...what kind of leavin do you make? i have tried shea butter and aloe and like the results but when i made shea lotion with oils it just sat on top of my hair and if i touched it i had oily hands.

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
Conditioner only method is using conditioner as your styler. www.tightlycurly.com is a good site to explain a version of this method. You can also do a search on conditioner only here on curly nikki or on youtube. When I do CO I still use my glycerin and aloe leave-in and then I apply my conditioner of choice (usually Tresseme).
The oily hands could be from too much product. I'm learning that shea butter is a great sealer and not a moisturizer. Since its a sealer you might want to use less; as if you were sealing you ends or your strands.

Re: Wash N Gos and Oil Sealing
@S4pphir3 I mix my oil with the conditioner or else it won't absorb into my hair when I do my WNG. I have to miX it with something creamy or it'll run down my face, neck, and everything else!lol
