How can you tell if your curls don't like silicones?

Post by pdarden on 27th April 2010, 8:51 pm

i'm a newby and i'm trying to 're-learn' my hair after doing the big chop earlier this month. how do i know if my hair doesn't like silicones? i know that the general perception is that silicones are not good for the curls but i've seen posts where some say that their likes or is ok with a little. How do i know? What can I expect if my curls don't like silicones? thanks in advance.

Dryness issues are a big clue, frizziness, no matter what you do, is too. My hair can't stand silicones.

I agree with Blondie. Your hair will tell you. I personally stay away from cones. I haven't used them since I've been natural. But I am actually going to try them to see if my hair really does hate them.

for me, my hair FEELS soft and silky when I use some products with cones (HEHH and Aussie Moist are good examples), but I notice that after I shampoo my hair feels very dry and stripped, and it didnt feel like when I shampooed after using silicone free products. Also, I noticed I was getting a lot of split ends in my hair, even though it felt pretty good. Silicones can be very misleading, and I'd rather not be tricked into thinking my hair is healthier/more moisturized than it is.

The thing is that it isn't simply the cones that are the problem. The bigger issue is that they must be shampooed out of the hair. You cannot remove them with just co-washing. So, lots of curlies choose not to use cones because they don't want to shampoo. Ultimately, the shampooing is the major source of dryness.

Ultimately, when you experience unusual dryness, shedding, breakage, etc. Most likely your hair will like some cones. Many moisturizing conditioners contain a cone. Not all cones are bad ones.

As for shampoo, it is not designed to be moisturizing. It's a clarifier and designed to clean the scalp and hair which leads to the stripped feeling. I use a cone free shampoo. When I add conditioner while I shampoo is still applied, I get the cleansing and the moisturizing needed at the same time. My hair feels very soft and well conditioned, afterwards.

This is the reason I've cut them out. I'm still learning my hair, so if it FEELS smooth and silky and moisturized, I want it to be because it is *truly* smooth and silky and moisturized, and not that the silicones coated it and make it feel that way when it truly isn't.

this is certainly a journey towards knowledge about my hair.... i have to throw out everything that i knew about my relaxed hair .... cleanse my mind of that knowledge so that it doesn't mislead me in my new way of thinking towards my natural hair...
