Help my hair please! Empty Help my hair please!

Post by da1stlady 5th May 2010, 2:39 am

Hello ladies,
I just joined this site and i must confess, you all
have inspired me to keep threading on my quest to achieving gorgeous
natural hair. The pictures and stories I've seen and read, have proven
to me that it is not impossible! i started my transition to natural
hair over 5months ago( maybe 7 to be precise) and omg, my hair has
refused to grow. i see some changes when i wash my hair ( that is the
difference between the relaxed part and the new roots) but every time i
comb my hair, it keeps breaking. now i don't know how to describe my
hair texture but i'll try, its very thick ( honestly a tail comb can't
get through even when its wet), its full, its really dry( asin i have a
flaky scalp regardless of how much i wash and deep condition it) and
lastly, i'm going bald from the front because it keeps breaking off.
Now i'm worried that i obviously do not know the right products to use
that's why my hair has refused to grow. i do not want to become a
product junky for many reasons( but mainly cus i'm poor lol), but i
would really appreciate it if you ladies help me pick out the right
products mainly to grow my hair and keep it moist and soft. Also i'd
like to know if wearing wigs and micro braids help speed up the
process, as soon as i take out my micro braids, i'll put a picture of
my own hair up.
Thank you ladies, o! before i forget, i'll find the time to study the slangs just cus i don't wanna be left behind lol

Hi,

I am going to seen BlondebyDesire and IntelligentBeauty your way. Both of those beauties transitioned and I am sure they can help you. In the mean time go over to curl street and check them out!

Chin up I am sure other curlfriends will chime in. I didn't transistion much so I can't help. Sorry! But what I can do is send the calvary your way!

Hey! Don't give up hunny. I went through the same problem while transitioning. My hair was breaking off like CRAZY and it just seemed like I was doing all the WRONG things to try and stop it! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I found that micro breads and weaves and things of that nature just made matters worse (killed my edges too) so I would suggest not doing those transition hair styles if you're having breakage. Have you tried twist outs? I hear that's a good transitioning style. (I didn't have enough hair to do this during my transition, but I hear other curlies raving about it!)

Also, what kinds of products are you using?

I was a long term transitioner and wore weaves to transition. To maintain or even enhance the strength of my strands I did protein treatments every 6 wks after I removed an install. I used Aphogee and Creme of Nature's Reconstructor conditioner. When using protein always follow with a moisturizing conditioner.

Always detangle your hair when it's wet with a wide tooth comb. It's best to do this with your conditioner to add slip and ease the combing process. I suffer from dry scalp and have added tea tree and peppermint oils to my products to relieve the itching. You can make a simple spritz with witch hazel and peppermint oil to soothe your scalp and try adding ACV rinses to your regimen but spray directly onto your scalp, massage then rinse.

I hope I haven't bombarded you with info yet try not to get too discouraged. This journey requires patience and a bunch of knowledge to properly grow and maintain healthy, natural hair. Try to focus on health not length. We're all here to help and support you.

I had a lot of breakage when I was transitioning. The relaxer and my new growth were not getting along. I finally did the big chop when I had about 3-4 inches of new growth. It was scary at first, but IMO it's easier not dealing with the relaxed hair. I agree with hamptonsfnst about the conditioning and wide tooth comb.

Even after five years of being natural I still have ups and downs. But dont give up and dont stop conditioning and mosturizing , you'll be fine. Hang in there! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I think breakage during transitioning is totally normal. The "line of demarcation" or where your natural hair meets your relaxed hair is super fragile so breakage along this line is normal if you're doing a lot of manipulation.

In terms of saving your edges, try not to do styles (like ponytails and buns and cornrows) that are pulling at this area...I second what ChefLucy said and try twist outs and braid outs. They're a lot less damaging.

Secondly, take a look at your products. What are you using for your deep treatments and conditioners? A lot of products made for relaxed hair *will not work* on transitioning/natural hair.

You can do it! Don't give up!!

Hi Michelle:

I had a long transition, so I've been there. I would recommend that you handle your hair as gently as possible. If you're wearing your hair straight (blowdrying and flatironing), try to stop. That whole process is just too much for your hair in this fragile state. Roller sets, twistouts, and braidouts are the way to go. And, bonus, these styles help you get used to living life as a curly girl! Try not to give up. Once you get through this transition, you'll be sooo glad you stuck with it.

wow! thank you very much ladies, to be honest i didn't think i would get this many replies so fast but i absolutely love it! yea i use aphogee protein treatment once a month, head and shoulders ( the shampoo) and the aphogee conditioner as well... i'l try looking for all the other products you ladies asked me to try. i'm scared of wearing my hair in twists and braids because i've become so used to weaves and microbraids but i'm prepared to take the big leap and start wearing my in twists or braids. As for the BC, uhmmm dat might have to come a lot later in the future because i'm not psychologically prepared loooooool..
Thanks once more ladies you guys rock !
