Are afro picks bad for your hair?
I've been using a pick a lot lately and I was wondering if using it too much can be bad for your hair? I notice that when I use it strands of hair come out, but I'm not sure if that's because I'm being mean to my hair and pulling it out or if its because it's just the strands that are naturally going to shed anyway.
Thanks.
Thanks.

My suggestion would be to only use it when you hair is wet. I wouldnt use it everyday either.
I use an afro pick to lift my hair at the roots only to give my twist outs more volume.

I agree with Lynnieluve, I wouldn't use it to pick my hair completely out. I use mine to lift my hair, but I only use metal ones. The plastic ones seem to pull my hair. Also, you can expect to lose some hair every day, especially if you detangle/pick your hair out every day.

Re: Are afro picks bad for your hair?
I use an afro pick to detangle my hair in the shower when its saturated with conditioner. I was wondering if it was bad for the hair too, I don't see a lot of hair in my pick though. My hair is about 3 or 4 inches and its really hard to grip a wide tooth comb and run it through my hair because it is so short. Any suggestions?

@ Lechatnoir324 - I use a shower comb but I only use it about once a month. I use my fingers the rest of the time.
I wear my hair in two strand twist/twist outs most of the time so when I am doing my twist, I use a wide tooth comb to help distribute the product though my hair. I guess that would be considered detangling too.

@ Lechatnoir324 when my hair was your length in your picture i did the same thing. When i Bc'd my bf gave me an old school black power fist metal pic(lol) and i used that for my first 4 months.
After my hair got to three or four inches the pic caused me to get really bad knots so I switched to a goody de-tangling comb. which i love

Jessiemae,
I love your avatar. How is your hair styled in that pic?

OH thank you so much I love yours too by the way. I had some pretty small twists in for about 4 or so days, i left the front twists in and flat twisted the sides back, created a small hump in the front and the back is a twist out. I think my hair was 3 or so inches at the time.

This is kind of an old thread but i'll throw my $.05 in.
I wouldn't say its bad, just be gentle at first. Look at the end of those shed hair and see if there is a bulb on the end. If there is a bulb, its shed hair. (Im sure you found that out by now) otherwise its breakage. I only use my afro pic on damp hair. If I put that thing any where near my hair when its dry (unless to lift like Lynn said) she growls at me. rotfl.

I think like combs and brushes, they can be bad for your hair if you do not use them properly.

not a fan of picks. limit their use like the ladies say. Maybe you should check your length. as jessiemae did, this might be a sign to change your routine.

Using a pick everyday isnt bad for your hair, your hair sheds everyday. however if your using it on dry, un- moisturized hair it can do some damage over time. Also you should always pick out in sections 1st from the end of the hair shaft to the root then you can pick the whole head to give it shape

Photobscura - I would suggest the plastic pick to gently lift your fro, twists, etc. I know back in the day people used metal picks to shape those fros and their hair was long and thick. However, I believe they experienced some sort of breakage from that tugging the metal through their hair.
Nufro, I have never seen an all metal pick. Here is the history of the Afro Pick http://www.metalafropicks.com/history_of_afro_pick.htm [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
