Henna on already dyed hair
I am wanting to start using henna but wasn't sure if it was ok to use on hair that is already colored? Will this hurt my hair if it is done on colored hair?
Thanks

You may use henna on hair that is chemically colored, and it will help repair the damaged hair due to the PPD's. I did. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Thank you envizionj..... This really helps. I had been afraid for along time to try henna. I will be trying henna as soon as I take out these braids.

Re: Henna on already dyed hair
I was wondering the same thing... I got my hair dyed at an Aveda salon awhile back and was told that Aveda colors will turn purple on hair that has been henna-ed due to the metals in the Henna (not sure if this is completely true but this is what I was told). I think it might be alright to use henna on already colored hair, but I think where it gets tricky is coloring hair that has already been henna-ed. (I know henna-ed is not a word lol)

@classypink,
There are only metals in poor quality premixed hennas - they usually say things like "black henna" and tend to be sold in Indian grocery stores.
But there are no metals in 100% herbal body art quality henna. A very good example of a body art quality brand of henna that many people here have had good results with is Jamila. You can often get that in the Indian grocery too but also online from a reputable vendor if you are nervous.
If you want to use conventional hair dye hair on top of hennaed hair then might be more difficult to do that because they work in different ways. Henna coats the hair shaft, whereas conventional hair dye needs to lift the cuticle to get inside the cortex of the hair. If you have an existing coat of henna on your hair then a subsequent hair dye job may not yield good results so if you intend to do that I would not henna.
