1. What made you decide to go natural?
Hair envy of other naturals! It's beautiful!

2. How long did you transition?
A whopping 3 months

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
Yes. I had a stylist chop it off, and a barber cleaned me up.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
Yes. After 48 hours I adored it! It was the sexiest style I've ever had. I miss it sometimes, but I'm loving the stages my hair goes through.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Shaeloe mix
HH Hello Hydration conditioner

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
Shoulder length by December 2010 (almost there!)

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
I have a renewed confidence since going natural. Stepping out with a different texture of hair can be intimidating at first, especially after being relaxed for so long. It's so freeing and liberating and it goes so well with my personality. A woman with natural hair exudes regality, beauty, and strength. All the qualities I'd like to believe I possess.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
Tikisa and Heather (my chicas)

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
India.Arie
Corrine Bailey Rae

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
Absolutely, positively, undoubtedly, NOT!!!!

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I never got perms on a regular basis, so whenever I went in to get a touch-up I normally had quite a bit of new growth, so the last time I went in to get a touch-up the stylist felt like she needed to let the perm sit for longer because i had so much growth....I felt like my scalp was on fire. Needless to say, that was it for me. I decided a few months later that that was my last perm.

2. How long did you transition?
I transitioned for about 15 months.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
I wouldn't call it a big chop since I transitioned for over a year, but after I got tired of the two textures I just chopped off my relaxed ends one day. I did it myself.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
Nope.....I felt like my head was TOO BIG for that.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Giovanni Deeper Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner and shea/jojoba mixture

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
GROWTH!! If I could achieve collar bone length (blow dried) that would be lovely.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
Yes, I would say I don't care what other people think as much anymore.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
My sister helped me style my hair when I stopped pressing my hair and actually started wearing it free and natural this past June. So she helped me stay totally natural cause I didn't know what to do with my hair.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
I like Tracee Ellis Ross' hair, but I don't have her hair texture and I like YaYa from Top Model.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
No, definitely not.

1. What made you decide to go natural? I was talking to one of my male friends, and he was saying how he looooooved how his ex was natural. I started to think why I got relaxers, and when I couldn't come up with a valid reason, I made the decision.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why? Yup. I went to a stylist because I didn't know there were other options lol

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it? Heck yes! I will admit, I did not feel comfortable at first (I even cried after the BC), but as time passed, I grew alot more confident despite heckling and disapproval I got from my HS classmates and some family members.

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by Janique on 21st February 2011, 2:38 pm

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I decided to go natural in 2008 after I went to the salon and got a relaxer and after a few weeks my entire scalp scabbed up and hurt. That was the last straw.

2. How long did you transition?
I transitioned for 22 months.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
No. After 22 months I let my best friend cut it for me. She was tired of me complaining about the straight ends.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
I transitioned until I was at a length I would be somewhat comfortable with.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Aussie Moist Conditioner, Roux Porosity (new staple), and olive oil.

6. Name one hair goal for 2011.
Minimize split ends and single strand knots.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
I'm more confident and happy with my hair than I was before and care less about what people think about how I look.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
Chicoro and my best friend.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Jada Pinkett Smith and Willow Smith

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I wanted to see why my real texture was considered so bad.

2. How long did you transition?
1 year.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
I BC'd after the year of transitioning. I cut it myself because it was easier and quicker.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
No. I wasn't comfortable with it that way at the time. I started straightening thinking that wouldn't harm my hair, but it did. Oh, the things I know now!

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Aloe vera juice, natural oils like coconut, and essential oils.

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
Another 6 inches by December.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
No, not physically, but mentally. I feel so much more beautiful and confident.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
I stay natural because of God who I thank for this unique gift, and for the naysayers. And myself, oops that's three, lol.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Lenny Kravitz and Akosua Busia who played "Nettie" from The Color Purple.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by CrAvInG_CuRlZ:) on 21st February 2011, 3:54 pm

1. Why did I decide to go natural?

Ive always thought natural hair was fly and I always wanted to go natural but had no idea how. When I got pregnant with my second child I decided that I really wanted to start getting int/o health and natural beauty care and I decided that it would be the perfect time to finally go natural as well. So I did some research, found CN and never looked back.

2. How long did I transition?

About 6 1/2 months

3. Did I BC and did a barber/stylist do it?

Yes and yes. I didn't trust myself to cut it even.

4. Did I rock the TWA and was I comfortable with it?

Well my hair was a tad longer than a TWA but yes I rocked it. I was comfortable the short hair b/c I had rocked a short cut before but I wasn't really comfortable with the texture b/c I had never dealt with it before. Also, the length was kinda awkward since it wasn't really a TWA so I didn't really like that.

5. 2-3 Staple products

Suave Naturals conditioner/KCKT/Henna

6. Hair goal for 2010

Health/Growth (go hand in hand)

7. Has being natural changed me in any other way?

I'm more confident and I have thicker skin. Not every one is going to like me or my look. SO. WHAT.

8. 2 people who inspired me to go or stay natural.

I was inspired by myself as a child. I looked back at pictures of the beautiful healthy hair that I had, and I wanted it back.

9. 2 Celeb hair idols

Can't think of one right now

10. Will I ever go back to relaxing.

No. Now that I'm natural I realize how unnecessary a relaxer is. Damage for no reason. It's so funny b/c for years I believed that I HAD to have a relaxer every few weeks, like I had no choice. I really didn't understand that I could just stop and that the world would not end, my head wouldn't explode and my hair wouldn't fall out lol. NEVER AGAIN.

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by Aunt_Lola on 21st February 2011, 4:16 pm

Oooh, this looks like fun. Smile

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I hadn't had much experience with my own natural texture since I was a kid and my mom didn't know what to do with my hair. I didn't even know it was curly, I just thought it was frizzy and poofy because my mom shampooed it, rarely conditioned, and brushed it to death. Once I figured out that my hair was curly I chopped off all the relaxed hair. bounce

2. How long did you transition?
About 4-5 months but I wasn't really transitioning. I always stretched my relaxers 3-6 months.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
Yes, I did the BC myself down to about 2-3 inches.. The 1st day I was very uncomfortable. But that changed once I walked out the door and the compliments started coming. Then I loved it! Laughing

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
After the 1st day or 2, then I rocked it and loooooved it! I love you It was soooo easy! I could wash my hair daily without having to wait for dry time, and I never worried about it. I also liked the feeling of the breeze on my scalp and ears. I also miss playing in it and how soft it was. I also enjoyed figuring out what would work for my hair and anticipating my growth. Earrings and lipgloss were my best friends. You couldn't tell me nuthin! Razz

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Errr... I use so many for different reasons. I'll have to update if/when I cut down a bit. Embarassed

6. Name one hair goal for 2011.
I'm at APL and I'm hoping I'll make it to BSL by the end of 2011.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
I'm happier with myself and accept myself more as I am instead of stressing over unrealistic ideals.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
My kids. I want to make sure they love themselves as they are and I have to start with myself as an example.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Amel Larrieux and Ananda Lewis. I think we have similar hair types except theirs' are longer and more defined.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
Nah, I love my hair how it is. Very Happy

1.What made you decide to go natural?
I wanted my old hair back! Long, thin and limp was not the way forward! I wanted to show my daughter and sons' that natural hair is beautiful.

2. How long did you transition?
This is actually my third time! The first time was in 1998, I was a long transitioner, three years total before giving in to the creamy crack.
Second time in 2002 followed by a texturiser 2 years later. I gave up the habit in 2005 and flat ironed till 2008 and 2 years and 2 months later, I am now free from heat damage…yay!

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
No big chop for me. I just know that I could not pull it off.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
I transitioned for quite some time till I was at a length where I could do a pony puff

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
JBCO, KCNT, and JessieCurl Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment.

6. Name one hair goal for 2011.
Growth retention. I’m hoping to get to APL by the end of the year.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
I accept everything about the way I look now, something that has come with age. I was quite an awkward looking teenager and although physically I changed, that mindset stayed with me into my twenties. Now I’m in to my thirties with this fly hair and I’m loving every second.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
My daughter and my best friend.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
N’dambi and Jill Scott.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
Absolutely not! I'm having way too much fun with hair my plus it make me look younger. It's a win, win situation!

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by bushbaby on 22nd February 2011, 2:04 am

1. What made you decide to go natural?

this is actually the second time that i have gone natural. i initially went natural 6 years ago,i transistioned for 11 months and ended up relaxing since my hair was falling out and i didnt know what to do with it.but i always said i would go natural again once i had more information.

2. How long did you transition?

this time around however, i only transistioned for 4 months.my last relaxer was around march '09.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?

yes i did, i did three bc's actually. one big one and two little ones. the first one happened in july 09. i admit i was a little impulsive and impatient and proceeded to cut my hair myself!and i am not a hairstylist! eeek! not a good look....so i went to a hair salon and had it done professionally but my hair cut ended up looking like a mullet. eew. then one night i was sitting in my living room with my family while my brother was cutting his hair and i decided to shave my head and start from scratch. that was in sept. 09. and theres no looking back Wink

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?

i rocked the HELL out of my twa! Smile omg i loved it so much. there wasnt anything in the world that was more freeing than letting go of the misconception of what society says is beautiful. i felt more beautiful and more sexy and confident than i ever had with long flowing hair down my back. i admit it was a shock, but a good shock not a bad one Smile

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.

HE hello hydration, jojoba oil,and shea moisture organic shea butter

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.

i just want to retain as much length as possible

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?

being natural has defintely made me think a little deeper as far as why we as black women have been blindly following tradition based on a belief that there is no beauty without straight hair or hair that is not our own. i always marvel at the way people have reacted to me with straight hair ( even my own family) versus me with my natural hair. in the end its still me.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.

i have always loved natural hair but have not had any personal friendships with any naturals in my lifetime.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.

erykah badu & esperanza spalding

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?

after transisioning and bc-ing and becoming natural for almost 1 1/2 years my guess is highly unlikely. dont get me wrong i do miss my bone straight hair every now and then but in the end i REALLY love my curls and wouldnt trade them in for anything Wink

1. What made you decide to go natural?
well ive only had maybe a few relaxers in my life. it was brief, then i went back to braids and wore those for a while

2. How long did you transition?
um, long story. short version: i kept getting trims over 7 years but i didnt really know i was transitioning.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
no

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
no. my hair has never been shorter than my collar bone(stretched) but i think TWAs are beautiful. my niece is getting on in June and I'm pretty excited to get to style one.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
1-Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner
2- Shea Moisture's Restorative Conditioner
3- Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
Tailbone length thick, even, HEALTHY hair.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
I'm more confident. I feel more insecure when I blend in with the crowd, and I hate looking like everybody else. I am more comfortable being different because I don't know how to be normal. =]

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
my dad and curlynikki. if it wasn't for finding her website i wouldn't have relaxed my hair but i would still be in the dark about natural hair care and frustrated.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Diana Ross, since forever. (by the way, Diana and her five children are gonna be on Oprah this Friday 2/25 if you wanna watch)

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
i hated the way my hair looked and felt when it was relaxed, and i was only 11. it wasn't even my choice to get it relaxed in the first place, it was my moms. so NO!
