1. What made you decide to go natural?

Relocated to San Fran from Oklahoma in 97, and didn't want to pay $85 for a wash, cut, and style. Was accustomed to paying only $25...LOL

2. How long did you transition?

I didn't. Went from a SL perm to a scalp cut, once I made the decision to go natural.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?

Went to my husbands barber. He was in shock when I walked in and told him to take it all off. He kept asking was I sure. I told him and was beyond sure and that I needed to stop being a slave to my hair. So off it went.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it? Yep. I was so comfortable with it, I wore a scalp cut for 7 straight years.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.

My shea butter mix, water, Herbal Essence.

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.

MBL

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically?

If yes, how? It's definitely made me more adventurous. I'm definitely having fun playing with and talking about my hair.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.

Nyomi and Kennedi....My 2 girls. Want them to know that our kinky, nappy, strands are indeed beautiful.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.

Rebecca (from The Practice) and Beyonce's guitar player with the HUGE FRO....

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?

Considering I've been natural for almost 12yrs, I can comfortably say NO!!!

2. How long did you transition?
About 4 1/2 months

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
YES! My Mom and I cut it in my bathroom. I was very anxious so having to wait for an appointment just wasnt what I wanted to do. It was a wonderful experience and I wouldnt have done it any other way.

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by cherece on 15th January 2010, 6:35 pm

1. What made you decide to go natural?
My boyfriend originally brought the idea up to me when we first met 8 years ago. It wasn't until the last 2 years that I took the idea seriously and I decided to give it a try last July.

2. How long did you transition?
I transitioned 3 1/2 months.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
Yes, I had a stylist do it. I'm a perfectionist and I knew it would be less stress for me to have someone else cut my hair. Otherwise I would have cut off most of my hair to attempt to get it even.
4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
I have a TWA now. I am still getting used to it, but I feel fairly comfortable.
5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
I am still in the product experimentation faze. Right now, I am finding that I mostly use Giovanni Direct leave in, HEHH, and EVOO.
6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
Hair Growth
7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
yes, I feel more comfortable with accepting myself for who I am. I don't try to make myself fit into someone else's idea of me.
8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
My boyfriend - he kept me strong in those early days of transitioning when I would have reached for a relaxer
My aunt - She went natural 10 years ago, even whe others made negative comments. For me, knowing that I had someone close to me that went through the same thing made a difference for me.
9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
I don't think I have any celebrity hair idols. No yet anyway. I do see quite a few idols from the curlynikki forum though : oooop2 and dajewel are just two of them.
10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
NEVER!!! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by Courtney on 15th January 2010, 7:49 pm

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I had tossed around the idea for a couple of years....last year I really became serious about it. I actually transitioned for 3 months in 2008 and then relaxed because I had no idea how to take care of the 2 textures. In April 2009, I had enough of the relaxers. My hair was in HORRIBLE condition, so began my journey.

2. How long did you transition?
8 months-I BC'd 12/31/09

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
Yes, I had a stylist cut it. If I left it up to me, I would not have done it.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
Yes I'm rockin' a TWA, and I'm comfortable with it. It's been a big change, especially when I see how I always wore my hair (straight/flat ironed). But like I've told friends....I'm lovin' the new me....

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
I'm still figuring that out. I really like Kinky Curly Knot Today, and jojoba oil.

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
My main goals are to obtain and retain length. I also want to have the HEALTHIEST head of hair.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
This may sound crazy but being natural has made me want to go after all that is waiting for me in life. When you chop off all your hair it is so freeing...nothing can hold you back. You no longer care what other people think.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.

I'm a photographer, in 2008, I photographed this girl. (she is from Ethiopia, and was adopted) When she came to my studio and I saw her face, she took my breath away. I thought ok...I have to go natural.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I was also inspired by my Mom...she went natural about 5 or 6 years ago.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Hmmm. I like to view Fotki albums and Youtube so I'm going to go with one of those "celebrities". Nicole Monique is my favorite....I LOVE her hair. It inspires me to be patience and love my own hair.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?

I've been natural a WHOLE 2 weeks, but I'm in love with my hair so I highly doubt it. cheers

Wonderful ladies!!!!! I love how becoming natural seems to change everyone in some type of way! Also, all of you have said you would never relax your hair again! That is awesome. I am still a fairly new transitioner (2 1/2 months) and I am so inspired by all of you!

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by MissFierce21 on 16th January 2010, 5:42 pm

1. What made you decide to go natural?
It was always something that I wanted to do, but I wasn't sure how to approach it. I was not a fan of relaxers, but I couldn't tell my mother that, so when I was in control, I took the plunge. I always tried to make my own path, and I knew that this was something I could do.

2. How long did you transition?
1 month.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
Yes, I had a stylist from Wal-Mart to cut it bc I was so eager to BC. I could have waited 3 hours for my sister to do it when I got home, but I knew I couldn't hold out any longer, and didn't care to hear reasons why I shouldn'y.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
Yes, as a matter of fact, I'm rocking it now, and I must say.......iAmFierce!!!

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
1. Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose, 2. Giovanni Direct Leave-In, and 3. Coconut Oil.

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
To achieve 100% healthy hair.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
Yes, I no longer entertain people thoughts and opinions of me. Not that it really bothered me, but we all have had times when someone touched your soft spot. I have also began to eat healthier, and use more natural products, besides hair products. This also means no make-up, no harsh body products, no hair weave--and I love it.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
My fiance, for he always tell me how loves that I am taking a stand against the norms of society, and it was a plus to know that he preferred a natural woman.
And...no one else bc my family thought that I was crazy.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
I have none, for there are not enough. Does youtube count? LOL!
Let me sub kimmaytube and KinkyKurlyQueen for this one. LOL

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
Not ever!!!!!!!!

Re: Natural Hair Survey

Post by AimWard on 16th January 2010, 9:49 pm

1. What made you decide to go natural?
2 reasons 1.)my parents were school teachers and I have 3 siblings. they simply could not afford to keep up a relaxer (I was getting touch ups every 6 months). 2.)I had waist length hair that ceased to be the moment I started relaxing, since I wasn't getting relaxed very often and I wanted my hair back, I decided to grow it out completely.

2. How long did you transition?
I think it was a full 2 years. But I never BC. I just trimmed and let the straight hair break off. I started this at the beginning of sophomore year of high school. I pressed my hair for senior pics and I was at mid-back.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
Nope.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
NOpe.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Abanga Karite unrefined shea butter
Kinky Curly Knot Today
Kinky Curly Curling Custard

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
Arm pit length unstreched

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
Hummm... I've been natural so long, I don't know. Being able to do anyhting I want to do and not worry about my hair has made me more confident.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
I'm way beyond the temptation of ever wanting to relax ever again (I've been natural 15 years) but if I had to pick I would definately sayTeri LeFlesh and Chicoro have inspired me.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Don't really have one. I mean, I like Rachel True's hair but she's surely not my idol. Most celebrities experiment with weaves and wigs so It's hard to tell who's got real hair.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
Hellz No!

1. What made you decide to go natural?

I wanted to go natural back in 1999 when I was only 14. When I went to my stylist to do my BC (though I didn't call it that back then), I took pictures of Jada Pinkett's hair. My stylist told me that my hair wouldn't look like that naturally and instead offered a texturizer. I wore my hair in a texturized TWA for 2 years before returning to the creamy crack. Even though I didn't go natural, I still loved natural hair. I used to roll my hair to make it look big and curly when it was relaxed.

I finally decided go natural for real in 2007. In the interim, I had graduated high school and college, and worked for two years. I was starting law school in the fall, and figured since I was a student again I wouldn't have to be as concerned about the day to day appearance of my hair as I was as a professional. At worst, I could just throw a hat on my head, which I certainly couldn't do in my conservative job at a bank.

2. How long did you transition?

I transitioned for 6 months. I got it flat ironed every other week and in the interim would just throw it in a ponytail. If I knew then what I know now... Fortunately, I didn't have any heat damage.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?

I BCed on February 26, 2008. I went to a natural stylist to have her straw set my hair. My terrible hair care during my transition had created a spot of breakage at the back of my head where my ponytail sat. The stylist informed me that there was nothing she could do but cut it.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?

After my initial surprise, I loved my TWA. It didn't hurt that my boyfriend was the first person to see me after my BC and had nothing but compliments on my hair.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.

-bentonite clay
-Giovanni Direct leave-in
-Qhemet Biologics burdock root butter cream

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.

Maintain healthy hair.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?

Being natural has changed how I view myself and my hair. It has also inspired me to live a more healthful lifestyle.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.

-My former boss, who had rocked the cutest, neatest twists. She inspired me to finally go natural by modelling professional natural hair. I originally figured I would just pay someone to style my hair in neat twists like hers. Almost two years later, I've only been to a stylist once, and do my own twists (braids, bantu knots, etc) instead!
-My boyfriend, who has been my biggest cheerleader since before I decided to go natural. He loves my hair and knows more about natural hair than any guy should know!

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.

I don't really have celebrity hair idols, since their are very few celebs that have natural hair that looks anything like mine. I try to be my own idol, as well as following people whose hair looks similar to mine, so that I don't get caught up in coveting hair that looks nothing like my own.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?

Nope. I love my hair too much!

1. What made you decide to go natural?
My hair started breaking off because I was getting relaxers too often, so after getting my last relaxer I just decided not to get another one.

2. How long did you transition?
I was a long term transitioner. I took about a year and a half before I cut off all the permed ends.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
No I did not Big Chop.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
No, I never had a TWA...I'm pretty sure my head is too big for that lol.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
1)Herbal Essenses Totally Twisted/Hello Hydration
2)My Shealoe Mix
3)My Glycerin Hair spray

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
To retain at least four inches in length.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
It has made me consider being more healthful in other areas of my life...If I
can take good care of my hair, than I can take good care of my body too.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
1) My boyfriend.
2) My other natural friends--> Most of my friends are natural!

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
I don't have a hair idol...but I really like Jada Pinkett Smith's hair (natural or
curly) and Nic from ANTM.

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
Definitely not!...My hair feels is way more versatile natural and when I wear it straight, it looks way better than it did when I was still getting relaxers. I also do not miss hour

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I experienced A LOT of breakage, thinning, and damage during the last 2 years of having a relaxer. I couldn't take that my hair wouldn't fill in and grow longer. On top of that it was getting way too expensive to get my hair done 2-3 times a month.

2. How long did you transition?
I transitioned for 4 months.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
Yes, I big chopped. I was going to have a stylist do it, but I got impatient and did it myself.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
Unfortunately, no. I was really self-conscious after my chop. I was happy, but I've had long hair my whole life, so it was hard at first. I wore a hat for a month before I wore my hair out.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Water, shea butter, coconut oil. (These I'm sure about, the rest are still up for debate).

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
Growth...yea I want it.

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
Yes, I've become more aware of ingredients period. I have more knowledge about how to take care of your own hair. And of course, how I view myself and others.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
No one in particular.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Many of them have no name (just pics I've found). But I love Tondi, she a model from Ohio. Her hair is fab!

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
NEVER!!!!!

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I've always been natural (24 years next month). But, I stopped straightening my hair in 2006. And I started wearing my natural texture in 2007.
2. How long did you transition?
N/A
3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
N/A
4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
My hair was pretty short when I started wearing it out, like 4-6 inches. But I've never really had a twa (I was born with a full fro lol).
5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
-Gentle shampoo...I have to keep my scalp clean to avoid problems.
-Slippy conditioner for detangling and conditioning.
-A good creamy leave-in/moisturizer that allows my hair to retain moisture for days.
6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
-Strong, split free hair from roots to ends.
7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
-I recognize that I was perfectly made and am more accepting of what would be considered my body's "flaws".
-It's also changed my attitude.
8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
I can't think of anyone in particular. But random girls I saw around campus or just in day to day life who had beautiful natural hair definitely helped me see that there were other options besides a press and curl.
9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
India.arie. She's gone from locs, to twa, to puffs, fros, braids, etc. etc. She always changes it up, it looks beautiful on her, and it's great to see someone consistently wearing their natural hair.
10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
I've never relaxed and I can confidently say I never will. I haven't gotten my hair straightened since 2006 and I'm pretty sure I won't do that again either. I'd only want to straighten when I reach full tailbone length just to see it...but I can't imagine flat ironing my type 4 hair at that length. I imagine it would take ALL day and I definitely can't trust anyone else to do it.

1. What made you decide to go natural?

I was growing restless with my "boring" relaxed hair & also getting fed-up about my dry ends that never seemed to be as moisturized as I wanted. I'd also always admired beautiful, big-haired, naturals since I was young.

2. How long did you transition? i transitioned for about 5 months.

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?

YES!!! did it spontaneously in my bathroom &&& looooved it Smile

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?

I still am!!! lol. After the initial shock of seeing the hair falling to the ground, i quickly fell in love. At first I was nervous about being the center of attention, and facing questions of "why i cut my hair." I never was uncomfortable with it, but didn't look forward to hearing what others had to say.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Unrefined Shea Butter
Giovanni 50:50 conditioner

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.

To develop a regimen that helps keep my ends moisturized & help me attain healthy 100% natural hair!

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?

Yes, in order to go through with the BC, I had to come to a point where I no longer let other people's opinions hold me back. I also have come to appreciate myself more and the confidence I have gained is unbelievable. I'm not afraid to speak up and stand out. I'm not cocky, but I am comfortable in my own skin & love being me. When people see my BC'd hair for the first time, they sometimes say things like "I approve, it looks good on you." But I really don't care anymore, because this is about me & I don't need their approval...although compliments are always welcome. lol.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.

One of my co-workers
an upperclassman at my college

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.

Esperanza Spalding
Wakeema Hollis

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?

nope Smile definetly not in a million years...

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I've been natural all my life. My mother always told me that a relaxer would make my hair fall out, so I never got one. I wanted to get a relaxer in my high school and college years, but I was terrified that it would leave me bald. I used to straighten my hair regularly, but last year I started to get more into caring for my hair in its natural state (thanks to blogs like this!), and I haven't broken out the flat-iron in over a year now!

2. How long did you transition?
N/A

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?
I didn't BC, but I did get a major hair cut (cut it to my chin) in 2008 to try and get rid of colored and damaged ends.

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?
No. I've never gone shorter than chin-length.

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
a. Herbal Essence Hello Hydration conditioner
b. Shea butter/coconut oil mixture
c. Garnier Fructise Sleek and Shine conditioner

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
I don't have a length requirement or anything, I just want healthy, beautiful, long hair!

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
Since I started to really care for my hair in its natural state, I read a lot more labels. Not just on hair product bottles, but on what I'm eating also. I also reach out to other naturals more and am more inclined to give advice, share websites, and encourage them in their journey.

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
My mother and my homegirl Liz.

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Tracee Ellis Ross (of course!) and Bre

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
I will never ever relax my hair!

1. What made you decide to go natural?
I've basically been natural my whole life. My mom was anti my getting a perm until I was 15
and (in her opinion) old enough to be held responsible. So I guess what made me stay natural
was the numerous styling options. Plus, no one else was!

2. How long did you transition?
I didn't

3. Did you Big Chop? If yes, did you have a stylist or a barber cut it and why?

4. Did you rock the TWA? If yes, were you comfortable with it?

5. Name 2-3 staple products in your regime.
Shea Butter, HE Totally Twisted, Garnier Frutisse's Wet Shine.... hopefully henna will be at the top of
this list by the end of this weekend!

6. Name one hair goal for 2010.
Collar Bone Length (unstretched), but mainly to just keep her soft, moist, and happy =)

7. Has being natural changed you in any way besides physically? If yes, how?
Since I've pretty much been natural, not too many changes... well, I'll take that back. I do wear my hair
straight, and, I don't know what it is about the curls, but... when my hair is in her natural state I feel like
my most confident, creative, unique, and happy self =)

8. Name 2 people who have inspired you to go or stay natural.
My Cousins Melba and Crystal (who I "converted..." lol), who were quite mad when I began to straighten!

9. Name 2 celebrities that are your hair idols.
Corinne Bailey Rae (have you see her hair recently??? AMAZING) and Jill Scott

10. Would you ever go back to relaxing your hair?
Awh hell-to-the-naw!!!! LOL, never have, never will... WHY? =)
