At first I was using TIGI Bed Head Moisture Maniac as a co-wash and leave in and sealed with olive oil spray. My washNgo would look good for a week, but it always looked a little dull/dry to me on day 2. And it always dried kind of hard feeling. Everyday I would re-wet with water and a little olive oil. Then after doing some research on glycerin and my city's dew point didn't mesh well with it.

So, last night, I tried Garnier Fructis Moisture Works Condishner, no glycerin. I used it just like I used the Bed Head, but this time I sealed with Sweet Almond Oil. This morning, I refreshed with water like usual. Now, my hair is very soft but still a little dull/dry looking. It does not feel dry, and some places are kind of flat compared to the rest.

Is there something I should be doing differently? Do I need to co-wash every morning since I always like the way it looks when it dries? Has anyone else gone through this? What did do/learn?

Hi Jackie!
I've never used the GF conditioner, or almond oil, but maybe your hair is just getting used to the switch in products. Different products are obviously going to yield different results.

I actually just bc'ed and I've found that personally, I like co-washing at night. Then I use a bit of shea butter or coconut oil on my damp hair and let it air-dry overnight. I use whatever styling product in the morning. I've had good results, so far. However, I'm sure there will be good & bad hair days!

But you have to do what works for you...

There is no wrong or right way...Just keep at it, this is definitely a trial and error thing for us newbies! :-)

Hope this helps

You are so right about trial and error. Today (bad girl, I know) I went back to Bed Head and sealed with almond oil. The results are good, but the curls aren't as defined as I'm used to. I'll do this for another week or 2 and see what happens.

You are using really good conditioning products right now. I used Suave Coconut when I BC'd and I had about the same amount of length as you. I co-washed daily, and and what worked for me was a good conditioner and Giovanni Leave Conditioner with jojoba or olive oil mixed. My hair stayed moisturized the entire day. Shea butter is an awesome heavy product to use, but I recommend that as your hair grows a little more. Congrats on your BC!

I follow a CG method too, and what I have found was that using regular conditioner as a leave in was making my hair dry out. It was never moisturized and always stayed brittle no matter what I did. I stopped using regular conditioner (this was my Suave Coconut) as a leave in a just used my water based spray, shea butter, and coconut and/or castor oil to seal. My hair is always moisturized now.

I would like to add that I looked at Moisture Maniac and it does have a cone in it. That could be the culprit. I also suggest doing an cold water acv rinse after your finished co-washing. That may help with shine. But also note that for those of use with coilier hair, there won't be this drastic shine to it at all times. Those who have a looser curl pattern have more shine, because there is a smoother surface that the light can reflect off of. As long as your hair is moisturized I wouldn't worry too much. Lastly, If you need to moisturize multiple times a day or multiple times during the week until your hair is able to retain the moisture do so. As the wise ladies before me have said, "Listen to your hair." Smile

Hey JackieJ205!

Me too!!! I also saw your fotki... My hair looked just like yours my first BC too. I find that the wrong products on my hair will cause it not to curl anymore. Then I just BC again.

For my wash n go I used Giovanni Smooth as Silk. But I'm finding it hard to stay moisturized. I just tried the V05 Moisture Milks Conditioner & it left my hair shinier & more moisturized than Giovanni (but I'll still use it as my co-wash). Coconut oil on my hair wet, will stick it down to my scalp - it won't curl any. I'm trying to figure out a light oil spray I can use.

How well does the water mix with the oils? I want to try it with the coconut oil - especially...

I've recently began to get the hang on the dull looking issue. I stopped using the bed head mositure maniac because it has glycerin (a humectant) in it. I guess it wasn't agreeing with the current weather. On Tuesday (I think) I co-washed left teh condish in and slept with a plastic cap on. This made my hair a little more shiney and soft. On Friday I co-washed using Garnier fructise Moisture Works condish, DC'ed with a mixture of the Garnier Fructise, honey, shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, and jojoba oil. Let that sit for about 2hrs under a plastic cap. Rinse out with warm water, apply more Garnier Fructise and rinse out with cool water. The cool water kind of left of the condish in my hair without having a lot of excess. Then, I sealed with almond and jojoba oil. This method left my hair very soft, shiny and the culs bounce right back into place. Oh, and I applied my shea mixture to dry hair the next day because I don't like the way it feels on wet hair, plus it kills my curl definition.

It mixes great. You have to shake it though to make sure the oil isn't just sitting at the top.
