Deep Conditioning on Dry Hair

I was watching some YouTube videos and saw a couple of vids where some naturals deep condition on dry hair. Sort of like the reverse of the whole washing your hair, then deep conditioning it. Suppossedly, the conditioner absorbs better on dry hair. Well I was quite anxious to try out this method, so I did my hair tonight and applied Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose on my dry hair. I did spray a few squirts of water on my hair just so the conditioner could spread better, but for the most part my hair was pretty much dry. Afterwards, i sat under a hooded dryer for about 30 minutes as I normally would do for a deep condition. Then I washed it out, and proceeded to co-wash. I proceeded to my normal routine afterwards and twisted my hair up and all that. I can say my hair was pretty soft once I washed out the conditioner! I'm not sure if its a big difference than doing it on wet hair, but have any of you tried this method? If so, do you do it often? Have you noticed a difference?

I've done it a couple of times and do notice a difference in the softness of my hair. My curls seem to clump together too better when I dc dry.

Yes I agree with Mahoganytresses, I DC on like a friday night keep it on likely all day saturday then wash it out and my hair is super soft and I have more clumpage!!

In an effort to reduce my normally long wash days and b/c I was having too much time in the shower during the cold weather, I decided to find a way to get in the shower once and it not take all day while still retaining the products I really like. So, I continue to preo-poo overnight with oil, I now DC on the dry pre-pooed hair (about 5 weeks now) w/ moist heat for about 45 months and then I cleanse with ACV. This was the best time changing strategy for me. My hair is very soft, but it was very soft before, but now without the long drawn out wash day. Many factors to consider, but I believe the oil left in overnight, my stellar DC (AOWC), and the ACV are the heroes, not just one thing.

I have got to try this ACV rinse so many people are doing it and getting great results!!

Luscious, plz try it. I delayed trying it soooooooo long b/c I am very sensitive to smells, but it doesn't last. By the time I finish setting my hair, I no longer smell it. My regular cleansing ratio is 1 tablespoon ACV: 1 cup distilled water. If you have build-up, you make a more concentrated solution. I basically use water based products and don't have build-up. It yields fresh, clean feeling scalp, no itchy scalp like alot of ppl complain of, soft/shiny hair and your hair and scalp will be ph balanced. Cheap with no shipping I use the Bragg Organic. Its $3.00 for a 16 oz bottle. I get it at WF. I've seen it at the Vitamin Shoppe too, but the grocery store should carry it as well. If you try it, let us know what you think.

I primarily use water based products as well so I don't have the build up either. So I'm going to try this today. Now do you spray it on let it sit a little then rinse it or do you just pour it through your hair then rinse? and is this your last step before styling or do you further condish?

I use it as I would a shampoo. I put it in an applicator bottle and apply to my scalp. Sort of like making parts with the tip of the applicator bottle. Then I massage it into my scalp. It runs down the hair, but I also apply a little to the hair that I have gathered in my hands and do a little squeeze and scrunching motion. I let it sit a couple of minutes then rinse lightly. Also, keep in mind, I cleanse in sections. So, I do this for each section. At the end when my hair is back in it braided/plaited sections, I put my head under a cold water rinse and that's it. Although I rinse, I keep a little ACV in the hair like some ppl keep a little conditioner in the hair. I plop briefly, apply my kimmaytube and set. Luscious, the ratio I gave you I like b/c I like to feel just a little bit of oil still in my hair, but I don't feel it on the scalp. Because of this, I no longer need to add oils to my Kimmaytube leave-in. Note, my hair is in no way greasy feeling. When it is still wet, you feel a little oil, but when it dries, you do not feel it at all. Hope this helps. I can't wait to see your experience observations. Off to work I go. Bueno suerte!

yep..i've been dry DCing for about 6 months now..my hair doesn't druy out as quickly during the week. It used to be like 2 to 3 days, now I'm going 4 to 5 days without having to re respitz my hair. LOVE IT!

wouldn't that be considered a pre poo or something like that i have DC on dry hair before but i thought i was pre pooing

Yayyy, glad to see that most of you deep condition on dry hair and like it! I haven't taken my hair down after styling last night, but I'm sure its going to do good! I think next time, I may do it overnight, as that will definitely cut down on the whole process.

i put hello hydration and castor oil on my hair while it is dry and sleep on it. then when i wake up i co wash and rinse it out. Thats not my dc though. I use silk elements with olive oil and honey. I leave that on for like an hour. I consider that my dc. It could be pointless since I leave the hello hydration on for so long but it makes my hair feel nice. Im afraid to use shampoo or avc rinse because I dyed my hair and I dont want it to fade fast. I just rub my scalp really good with the conditioner.

I have only ever dc-ed on dry hair, so I can't compare it. I do it simply because I don't want to have to get in the shower twice.

Hhhmm, Im gonna have to try this also. If you dc the wash your hair woud that make it and prepoo? I still get kinda confused on the difference. I thought it was only considered a prepoo if you used oils?

I would consider pre poo anything you do before you wash your hair. I don't shampoo so I don't know what I would call it.

I shampoo my hair with shampoo (albeit sulfate free) So, my concern is that DCing prior to shampooing might be counterproductive. Any thoughts on this?

Hey JnB, I'd have to agree that i'm thinking along the same lines as you. I use shampoo as well and the few times I've applied condish to dry hair before shampooing (i would also consider this a type of "pre-poo"), I have still followed up with a DC after washing my hair. In this case though, I'm only using the condish b/c i'm temporarily out of my normal pre-poo oils. Its not a regular method that i use.

I see what you are saying! I've come to the conclusion that I'll only dry deep condition on the days that I choose NOT to shampoo! I usually shampoo every other week, or when I feel my hair needs it. On those times, I will definitely do my deep treatment after the shampoo days so that my hair won't be stripped. But if I just decide that I will ONLY co-wash, then I'll do the deep treatment on dry hair.

JnB- It shouldn't matter whether you use a non-sulfate shampoo, shampoo bar, ACV, or other cleanser because the benefit of the oils and a ""stellar"" moisturizing DC is it will be protective, helping your scalp and hair maintain some of its moisture and natural oils. I have done this using Dr. Bronner's and also shampoo bars. The key is the product you use. ACV can most certainly be drying if it is too concentrated or if it is used too often(depends on the person's hair).

DC prior to shampoo is simply a deep conditioning pre-poo as opposed to the more traditional DC after shampoo. The benefit is the same, keeping in mind that all conditioners are not necessarily designed to work on dry hair. So, see what the manufacturer suggests. It so happens that the conditioner I use is recommended on dry hair for DC purposes (AOWC). Pre-poo using oil is often identified as oil pre-poo, if someone wanted to make the distinction. Certain oils are conditioning also, like EVOO (esp. as a hot oil txt) and EVCO. I wouldn't worry about the category b/c 2 ppl may call it 2 diff things. So, that really doesn't matter, what matters is the great results the treatment yields.

I usually do a prepoo with oils. But that's simply so that I can remove shed hairs and make hair more maneageable prior to shampooing (a la Kimmaytube). I usually only leave them in about 10 minutes pre wash. And I always deep condition my hair after everything. The DC before shampoo I'm sure has benefits. However, I'd still feel like I need to DC again afterwards. To me, I'd still think you would need to replenish your hair with moisture after shampooing. No?

I think the difference between a dry DC and pre poo is based on the products you use. For example when I dry DC I use a conditioner specifically designed as a DC. On the other hand when I pre poo I use a mixture of oils. Note: This is just the way I look at it, not sure if other's think this way or not. Anyway, I hope this helps.

JnB, I invite you to try it. The only thing I can say is I prepoo w/ oil overnight (usually) or for several hours on washday. If I do the latter, I apply my AOWC for a few hrs, using moist heat. If I prepoo overnight, I apply the AOWC x about 45minutes w/ moist heat. Every time, I get very soft hair and I don't need to add oil to my Kimmaytube. You know, like always, I think there are always several variables like the type of conditioner, how long its on, ingredients in cleansers... Again, AOWC is intended as dc on dry hair. But, if you decide to try it, let us know.
