I haven't been, but I've heard good things about Corie at Toss Salon and Why Knot Concept is supposed to be great. Both are reviewed on yelp. Not sure on pricing though.

Amazon is the one everyone talks about... Let me know if you try any!

I can speak for Cori at Toss Salon, she's really nice and does great work, and she's also natural so she gave me a lot of great tips for my transition period. I got a trim and flat twist out for $60 I don't know what you're price range is. But the products she used made my hair soooo soft, it was best twist out I've ever had! I'm actually going to let her do my big chop next week so I highly recommend her!

thanks, I will be trying Cori, does she straighten your hair in order to clip your ends? I dont want to apply any unnecessary heat, I already have heat damage.

Not at all! She can cut your hair wet or straightened. I have heat damage from trying to straighten on my own so I can understand.

Ok.. So I finally went to Toss Salon Yesterday. I'm going to start off with the good:

Good: Salon offers a lot of good services and products. Very eye appealing. The stylist was nice and i like the long layered cut she gave me.

Bad: the wash bowl was so uncomfortable, I'm tall but not that tall that I have to sit on the edge of the seat. The dryer seat was way uncomforable also and the dryer was so hot it burned my scalp and the back of my neck. AND the twistout was dry, frizzy and undefined. I do better twisouts myself and all this for $80, is not ok with me. I would be okay with the price if the twisout was GREAT!! but I had to come home and moisturized and seal the hair from the dry, frizzy ends.

I was recommended to Yasmin from B Bella for good trims that perserve length for $15-20. You just have to come with your hair straignt enough ( using a blow dryer) This way you can avoid heat damage since no one knows your hair better than you and stylists can get heat happy..LOL!

Chicago Empty Any good natural salons in the south suburbs of Chicago?

Post by lillie 11th November 2010, 12:36 pm

I am in my 5th month of transition and I plan to chop off my relaxed ends in December. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good salon in the South Suburbs of Chicago?

I went to a different person at Toss (I don't remember her name). She was very nice, but she worked me into her other appointments so twist extensions that should have taken 3-4 hours actually took 9 hours.

SimplyMoi: You are so right about the bowls being uncomfortable at Toss. It's like they were made for tall people. And, the dryers are TOO hot. That, along with the length of time it took me to get my twists, are the reasons I didn't go back.

I'm trying Glo-On Naturals in Hyde Park next week for twist extensions. I'll let you know about my experience.

Just got my hair done at Glo-On Naturals in Hyde Park today. And, my hair turned out fantastic! She was quick and knowledgeable. It was an intimate setting that overlooked the lake on Lake Shore Drive. And, she's reasonably priced so you don't have to sell your first born as a fund raiser to afford her services Smile

All in all, I'm definitely going back to get my hair done there again. I think I may have found the person to do my hair going forward. I drove 3 hours to see her and I'll be doing it again in a few weeks for her to do my hair again.

Does anyone know of any salons that use the Deva-Cut method? I want to cut out my color and also add some shape. I know with this method they dont straighten your hair.

Courtface,

In the Bolingbrook area you could try Alice II Hair Salon or Shurle Hair Salon. I have not been to Alice II before. I have been to Shurle's a couple of times when I was transitioning with both natural and relaxed hair. At Shurle's she does have different natural hair products, but I found that she is a big promoter of Miss Jessies hair produts and was a bit too expensive for me, but you can call and see what you think.

@FloridaSunshiny- you make me feel better about my review, bacuse I hate to give h=bad reviews, but that was a really bad experience I hoped I wasn't being a diva, LOL

@Darling Cocoa- I have recenlty found Cally's Curl & Company in Chicago on Howard street and they use the Deva cutting technique. Never used them but was very curious.

Also, I just went to the Hair Cuttery in Greektown this past weekend and although she striaghtened my hair, my curls popped right back today, so I will be going back. My cut is awesome too, I really needed to cut off all the damaged color treated hair, smh( I had almost mid back letgh, and now i'm back to shoulder length....I digress)!! She is white, but don't be afraid, she was so nice about my hair (which some black people can be so rude) She explained what product she used and why and she listened to my preferences, concerns and turned down the heat when I asked. Also she was nicer in detagling my curls unlike some stylists who yank at it, LOL. My hair is super soft too. I would have kept the style more than two days if I hadn't sweat it out last night in the gym, but that's the life of a natural. Ask for Rene!!

I went to the Toss Salon last year and had the same problem with my hair.. It was dry and the style didn't look anything like the picture I showed her... My sister also got her hair done but she got a flat iron.. She liked it out and it turned out nicely..

She blow dried and then flat ironed with ceramics and make sure she know about your concerns for heat damage. The products she uses are good also and she uses a redken product with protien as well before she applies heat. No stove irons will ever go on my head again, lol. The total price is around $63. But you can also just go there for a trim for like 15 if you don't want the whole wash, trim and straighten, just go with your hair straight/blown out already. They break the prices down by each service recieved.

Chicago Empty Panache Salon

Post by figure8shape 15th March 2011, 12:38 pm

Stephanie who own Panache Salon in Oak Park, IL is great! She is super professional and is focused on HEALTHY hair. She mentioned that about 40% of her clients are natural. She is down-to-earth and is an awesome colorist too!

Chicago Empty Panache Salon

Post by tawanab 22nd March 2011, 5:29 pm

I can vouch for Stephanie at Panache I used to go to her for a few years and everytime she straightened my hair it ALWAYS reverted back to curly. She only using flat irons never a stove, and she is really focuses on the health of your hair. Panache Salon is quite and very stylish, and unlike most stylist she only take one client in the shop at a time! Only downside is she is VERY pricey you could eaily drop $90 on a wash/style/trim but I guess you get what you may for!
