Question About Shea Butter

Post by Free2BMe :) on 22nd March 2011, 9:49 pm

Is shea butter supposed to feel greasy?
I just got some shea butter today (the yellow kind) and I put it on my forehead and a part of my hair to test it out. I heard the yellow kind is the "fake" shea butter.
But when I put it on it felt a little greasy on my forehead (which is where my acne scars are).

Pure shea butter comes in two forms- white and yellow. The colors have to do with the type of nut the butter is harvested from and the country of origin. I would only worry about fake shea butter if it looks the same consistency as blue magic or other BSS grease.
That being said, shea butter can be greasy. It is a butter and acts like one. Some people mix it with other oils or ingredients to cut down on how thick/greasy it is (like shea butter and coconut oil, shea butter and aloe vera gel, etc). I would look at different recipes for using shea butter

Shea butter is going to be greasy. Most people mix it with other lighter oils to make it easier to scoop and apply. Because it is so greasy, a little goes a long way. My mix is 4 tbl cocoa butter, 2 tbl shea butter, 1 tbl aloe butter, 1 tsp Smart Balance oil, 1/8 tsp castor oil and 1/8 tsp vitamin e. I get it soft in the oven and stir it until its smooth. This is not exact, I know I might have put more oil to make it smoother.

Then I only use a dab rubbed into my hands and then rubbed on my hair. I don't use it like I'm greasing my scalp or hair.

I also use this mix for my skin. Not my face though.

Try going in a health food store like whole foods/other natural stores. They may have sea butter samples so you can see the consistency in the store. Also look up videos of shea butter mixes on youtube. You'll get an idea of the consistency, how much to use, and the effects on hair

Since it's a butter it's suppose to be greasy but not runny unless it isn't raw shea butter hope that makes sense it can be from ivory to yellow in color though i buy mines online or some flea markets there is another running around that resemble shea butter but isn't and is not harmless per say but is not shea butter to avoid all that i would until you sure about what shea looks like only purchase it from reliable sources
