Hair Color Darker With Protective Styling?

Post by mahoganytresses on 22nd March 2011, 4:30 am

Okay my usual natural hair color is a light, sandy-brown color. I have never, ever had permanent dye in my hair. I did my bc after 14 months of transitioning with mainly protective styles. I have noticed that my hair color is a lot different. I'm thinking maybe since my hair has been covered or twisted for the past year that the lack of sun touching my hair has made it darker.

Here is my natural hair color before I transitioned:

My current pic is what my hair color looks like now. WTH!!

Its probably just your natural hair color. Do you remember what the color of your hair was before you initially relaxed it? I ask because my hair was almost jet black as a child before I relaxed. After relaxing for so many years and then wearing color my hair was a light brown color. After my bc and growing out my natural hair color it is once again that dark black color. Also congratulations on your BC!

My hair was a dark brown with relaxers, and now that I'm natural it is almost jet black.

Yep, relaxers made my hair lighter. I always assumed I would start using Indigo when my hair is fully natural, but perhaps I might not have to! (although, if I start uing henna, I'll use indigo too to keep my hair black)

@Mahoganytresses, your hair when it was relaxed was more exposed to the sun which lightens it, but also as Dajewel said relaxers do strip down the hair removing a bit of our natural pigmentation each time, so prolonged use of relaxers plus sun exposure caused your hair to appear lighter. But since you've been transitioning letting your natural grow out no chemical affecting it and hidden from the sun, the darker hair is your natural. You can get it colored, if getting permanent color frightens you get semi permanent, its no lifting involved just deposit only! Congrats on your BC!!

thanks ladies for the input! As a child, even before relaxing, my hair was a sandy brown color. I was born with blonde curly hair and I was actually called Goldilocks as a little girl! I think that relaxing definitely lightened it more though. Hopefully this summer it will lighten up some being out in the sun but I dont expect it to get as light as it was with the relaxer! Thanks again ya'll!
