I got a MJ Silkener

Post by FloridaSunshiny on 22nd March 2011, 2:03 am

I broke down and got a Silkener from MJ about a month ago. I've been trying to decide if I should post my experience about it on here or not. I did a quick search and found that there are a few posts about texturizers, so I decided to share my experience with you.

My two reasons: First, I travel 60-70% of the time for work. After a year of being on the road throughout the U.S. and Latin America, something had to give. And, what I had to give up was the amount of time I was spending on my hair. I was paying an inordinate amount of money to check my bags with product and my hair dryer and I was spending countless hours doing my hair and trying to maintain a consistent look. I was completely drained and needed more manageability. Second, I needed a new look...a change in my life, if you will. I started with my hair and am working my way down by getting into shape.

My initial reaction: I was horrified about what I had done, much like I was when I did the Big Chop. You see, I didn't have the liberating experience that many of you had when I cut my relaxer off. I cried. I cried. And, I cried some more. The deed was done, so I hunkered down and started playing with my hair. Surprisingly, when I got the silkener, I wanted to cry because I felt that I wasted three years caring for my hair and now I backslid to the creamy crack like my name was Pookie.

After a week: I didn't like it. My hair lacked moisture and was a bit rough to the touch. After I washed and styled it myself, it was super pretty. I did a wash n' go and when it dried, it looked exactly like my hair looks when I do a wet twist. With a bit of daily moisturizing and sleeping in a satin cap, the style lasted for a week. Usually, my twists outs don't go any longer than a few days.

After Week 2: I tried a different style...a wild and wavy look. It was beautiful. I was able to do this in half the time it would take for me to style when natural. And, it lasted for 1.5 weeks this time.

After Week 3: I'm deciding what I'm going to do next.

By no means am I advocating you get a texturizer/silkener or whatever you call it (If I did, I think I would be signing my own death certificate lol). It was something that was right for me and my lifestyle.

I am glad to hear your results. Especially that you are not disappointed. Sometimes we have to do what we do! Please show some pictures. Believe me, I understand about the travel and time crunch. When I was in the navy, I just wacked mine off because I just did not have the time to style it or the space in my luggage to pack a bunch of products and styling tools.

Back then I used a relaxer and only left it in for as long as it took to apply and washed it out. My signature styles were just like you describe. Twistouts, braidouts, and buns as my hair grew longer. You should try the silk scarf twistout, it gives a good elongated result on all types of hair.

I think a lot of the natural hairstyles will still do for you, they will just be faster. Smile Enjoy the travel. got any room in the luggage now you don't have to carry a lot of products and styling tools? Idea

Good Morning!

I had a texturizer when I was in the service too (Army) due to it being more convenient. The military is a be-atch when it comes to wearing your hair natural....don't get me started. Anyways, I want to see pictures too. Do you think when the time comes, that you will re-do the process?

Girl I am so upset.......that you didn't post pics!!! You know we love pics here!!!! And don't be afaid to post anything here, even if you relax. This is an environment for learning about hair health, not just 100% natural hair. I am happy that you have found something that's works better for your schedule.

Still waiting for pics Laughing
