From locs to Natural curls
So I've made up my mind to unloc my hair and just where my naturally curly hair. (way excited ). I've already taken down two rows of locs and i'm so happy and can't wait to be finished. Don't get me wrong, i LOOOVE..... my locs, I 've been loc'd for four years and my loc journey has taught me so much about myself and my roots. I just feel like I want to experience something diff for a while. The closer I get to being done I'm wondering where to start when I get there. Is there a certain something that I should or shouldn't do to my hair at first? Is there any products that i should consider to start me off? I know it may soud weird but I 've kinda been out of the loop for the past four years since caring for locs is quite diff from natural hair. I'm open to any suggestions, please let me know .

You know, i was thinking that that would be one of my greatest regrets in unlocing I feel ya. when you first unloc, what did you do? was your hair brittle at all? did you wait to put heat to it? was it certain products that you couldn't use? ect.

Re: From locs to Natural curls
Hey, I unlocked about 2 yrs ago after 7 yrs of locs. It was definitely something different. The first thing i tried was having my hair flat ironed but that was a no go for me b/c i did not feel comfortable with straight hair. Also, my hair easily swells and frizzes. The hardest thing is learning your hair and what works for your hair. What works for some may not work for you and that's the bottom line to it. Make sure you keep your hair moisturized, pay attention to the ingredients in your products so that you can figure out which ones your hair do not like (some people do well with proteins some dont). Good luck.

I know I may be kind of of subject, abd I may be a bit slow... But I thought that if you had Loc's, you had to basically shave ur head to start over...
Wow, I learn something new every day...
SO what it the process to un-loc-ing Loc's? Esecially loc's that have been up for years? (Interested to know the process)! I don't have loc's, but No1 has ever enlightened me about un-loc-ing!

@NaturalDivaBaby, I suggest you check out www.livecurlylivefree.com to see figure out the porosity, texture, density of your hair. Therefore you can determine which products to use, which ingredients to stay away from etc. When you wear your hair out, you have to do more to care for it because your ends are exposed, unlike with locs when your ends are coiled up. I'd also suggest protective styles like twists, coils, etc, because it gives you the "get up and go" feeling like with locs.
Find a good DC...and DC after every shampoo. Also, invest in a good moisturizer(high water content) and an oil to lock in the moisture. All of these should contain ingredients that work with your hair type/texture/porosity etc. HTH!

Re: From locs to Natural curls
P.S- I'd also recommend a trim after taking out your locs to maximize health and growth

Hello NaturalDivaBaby, just for the record it doesn't sound weird that you have been out of the loop. Locs is kinda like a world of its own. Have fun taking them out. It took three months to take mine out after four-five years (my second time with them).. I offer you the following:
1. put conditioner on the Loc as you take it out
2. If you have the Luxury of not doing much with you hair once you have taken them out, a simple style with little manipulation.
3. Add moisture, moisture, moisture, then seal (conditioner and a oil)
I like Totally Twisted and I have a Shea,Olive, Coconut, Castor mix
4. while you are practicing low manipulation read up on the Curly Girl Method. Study the process and why??? Read up on Moisturizing and Sealing Natural hair, very important
5. Consider starting with Wash & Go's
6. This doesn't have to be expensive. Our hair does what it does. Its not product its process. Study the Process

@Cupcake, The hair is so amazing, when I learned that i could actually unlock my hair I though noway!! but it's working and other than time consuming, there's not much to it. I wet my locs, drench them in Shea butter softening lotion and use a metal rat tail comb to pick out the loc. I though i would end-up bald doing this but I still have a very nice amount of hair to work with once Im completely unloc'd.
@MelMelBee, thanks for the info. I am was wondering what type of hair i have or how to find out so Im surely gonna check out that site, there is a new natural hair product line that target is carrying that just hit Minnesota, Kinky-Curly, you may have heard of it.(one would think that Mn didn't have a natural comm. with the lack of Products and information that we suffer here but thats a diff story ) any who, I've been reading on this product and i think I'm gonna start there and see wut I find but I will send an update and thanx again....
@Curlytee, Conditioner is definitely the key to getting these locs out. You say it took you 3 mos. to take your locs out, wow! Can i ask if that was a personal pref... or am I just moving way too fast? I have 1/4 of my locs down and Im trying to be done in under four weeks. I know my hair is fragile now and I wanna cause as little damage possible so Im wondering if i need to slow down and have more patience. I just get so busy at times so when i get the time to take more locs out I really go hard at it. I know I sound like a nervous wreck but I luv my hair and I just wanna be as good to it as possible .

Re: From locs to Natural curls
I don't think how fast you take them out makes a difference. It took me that long because I had a full time job and worked late on many occasions and I was very careful not to rip up my hair.

Wow, although it may be time consuming, it's more simple than I thought...

my hair actually was not brittle when i took them down... i didn't put heat in my hair until a year later. having straight hair wasnt really something i wanted at the time. and i used whatever products my hair liked. and honestly i'm tired of being a loosegirl (again) and going back to the locs...

Re: From locs to Natural curls
This is absolutely amazing to me. When I cut my locs I had no idea whatsoever that "un-locing" them was even an option. My stylist cut my locs out and made sure to cut as close to the loc where it started as possible so as not to cut off all of my loose, new growth hair. I ended up having a good amount of hair. I was natural but wore weaves and braids.
I would suggest focus on moisture, just as others have suggested; get a good trim to have a good starting point for your new free natural hair; keep it simple with low manipulation and/or other protective styles like twists so you are giving your hair time to adjust; and deep condition regularly so you are giving your free hair good nutrients so it will be healthy and flourish.
Good luck. Let us know how it works out. I would love to see your results.
