Is henna gloss as effective as straight henna?
Hi Ladies,
I'm preparing to henna for the first time (waiting on my shipment) and I'm leaning towards doing a henna gloss. It sounds like the application and rinse out are a bit easier with a gloss, and I'm most interested in the conditioning effects from henna versus the color.
I don't want to "water down" my results though, so I'm wondering if there is a difference between doing a gloss (positive or negative) versus a straight henna application.
Thanks so much for your feedback, in advance!

It depends on how much henna you use to make the gloss and how long you let it sit to release dye.
My quick Deep conditioning Henna gloss - 25 grams of henna to a lot of conditioner, applied immediately and left on for about 30 - 40 minutes under the dryer, the heat that makes the color release a little on my hair, some of the conditioning and strengthening benefits.
My Deep Henna Gloss - 150 grams of henna, 4 bags white tea, 2 wild berry zinger (love the smell), 1/2 cup boiling water, Protein-free Conditioner. I brew the tea and let it cool to room temp, mix some with the henna until its like thick clay. Let it sit until dye release and then mix with a lot of conditioner.
Slather it on my hair, wrap it and sit under the dryer so I get the benefits of heat. I keep it on for about 2 or 3 hours with at least 30 to 40 under the dryer on medium. This one does color my hair cause the amount of henna is almost what I would use for a full henna. I like it because the conditioner lets it rinse out easier than henna paste alone.
I get my best henna results from the smooth gelled henna I make from a recipe on Henna for Hair, but that one is very involved and takes a lot of prep.

Thanks Madeaj! What kind of protein-free conditioner do you use? I have Giovanni at home, and I'm pretty sure it's a protein-y conditioner.
I'm gonna look up the gelled recipe...you've got me curious now. lol

I use aussie moist or pantene for curly hair. I'm in PJ rehab so I will use whatever I have in the coming months. Here is the link to Fia's Smooth Gelled Henna Scroll down toward the end of the page.

thanks so much for the link...hmmmmmm. the gelled henna sounds very interesting. It does look like quite a process though, like you said. It's definitely on my list of things to try!

Re: Is henna gloss as effective as straight henna?
I like the henna gloss better because it is easier to rinse off my scalp and I use a full henna application. Last time I did a gloss, I left it on for 3 hours with 1 hour of heat but this weekend i will use 1/2 hour heat and sleep with the gloss for a deep condish.
What are some proteins i should look to avoid in the condish i mix with my henna? And do I have to use mail-order henna or can i purchase it at my local indian grocer? Thanks, Ladies.

IndyPie, I haven't done a henna gloss yet, I've been doing regular henna treatments. But if you're looking for a good protein-free conditioner, I use Generic Matrix Biolage Balm from Sally's when I deep condition after the treatment.

Re: Is henna gloss as effective as straight henna?
My first Henna was a henna gloss. I had followed the directions that CN gave and I was pleased with the results. I used 100g box of Jamila mixed with 1.5-2 cups brewed green tea. Let it sit for a few hours, added a cup or so of Tresemme Naturals conditioner, mixed it up and applied to freshly washed hair. It wasn't that much of a color change, but that was ok as I was still getting the benefits, but not as much of a color commitment in case I didn't like it.
These days i'm using Reshma Henna from the indian store ($2.99/box) Amla, Shikaikai etc and do full strength treatments. I do like a henna gloss every now and then. Good luck and happy henna'ing!!

sydnisd183, why don't you do the glosses as much? do you notice a difference in the results?

I love both the full strength and the glosses. In my experience, the color deposit on a full henna would be to me a 5 stars out of 5, and a henna gloss would be a 3 out of 5. I still noticed quite a color difference when I was doing glosses. I did that at first because honestly, I didn't know what to do and had the well known fear that my hair was gonna turn bright bozo the clown red lol.
I like the glosses though because they rinse out easier. I usually leave those on overnight. But with full strength i don't keep it on as long (3-4 hours max). then i rinse, co wash and DC with my head wrapped for about 45 minutes under the dryer, rinse out and style.
I guess for me it depends on how much time I want to spend on the process. Both ways have been beneficial to my hair.
