What do you think of this shea butter recipe? Empty What do you think of this shea butter recipe?

I found this video by PLTbyCormie on YouTube on YouTube the other day and I'm kind of interested in trying it, and sort of hesitant.

The recipe is shea butter, other oils and...Eco Styler gel. The gel kind of threw me. I do have a crap load of Olive Oil Eco Styler that I really don't want (soooo over gel at this point) and wonder if anyone has tried using it this way before. If not, let me know your thoughts anyway.

I did, way back when I first went natutal but I didn't like the texture or the feel. It gave my hair hold and shine, but I wasn't happy about the build up.

I haven't tried her exact recipe, but I have mixed shea butter, olive oil and the Olive Oil Eco Styler gel and used it for a twist out. I found that this mix gave me a very soft twist out that was still well defined. It lasted 4 days. Probably could have kept it longer, but I was ready to wash my hair.

If you're really not a fan of gel, you may want to find a different recipe or whip the other ingredients together sans the gel. It sill should be creamy, if you you don't melt the shea butter too much.

@LadyMika - Yes the build-up could be an issue. I may try it with the view that I may have to wash my hair sooner...

@elitebeauty13 - I think I could also try aloe vera gel as well. I'm normally not into too much gel because I don't like the hard hold, but the shea butter would take care of that.

I'm going to mix Shawna's Shea-loe hair & body butter (from kinkycurlyme.com)

1/2 c shea butter
3 tbsp EVCO
3 tbsp jojoba oil
3 tbsp castor oil
3 tbsp AVG
1/2 tsp veg glycerin
10 drops peppermint oil*
10 drops tea tree oil*
5 drops rosemary oil*
3 drops rosewood oil*

With mixer blend/whip shea butter and EVCO (microwave a few seconds if needed); Whip room temperature AVG w/shea butter, CO & EVCO. STIR IN *EOs after completely whipping other ingredients.

I'm not feeling all the tea tree oil... TTO stinks! lol

This recipe has many ingredients my hair likes; castor oil (just not alone), EVCO (my staple), glycerin & shea butter (just not alone). I have other EOs, I will probably go for a more fruity scent vs minty one.

I haven't use this recipe but its a little similar to the OOOP2's recipe. it been working really great for me. OOOP2's doesn't call for all of the essential oils or the gel. Maybe I just might add some of my gel a portion.

@ UMPH the Tea Tree Oil must be used sparingly. It also can be used for so many other things. I use it for insect repellent, spray a mixture of water and Tea Tree on mattress when I change my sheets, in the summer add few drops to body wash

@UMPH I agree with curlytee. Also, Tea tree oil, peppermint oil and rosemary oils are irritants and have to be used a little at at time. The amount you have listed is too much compared to the carrier oils you have.

Peppermnt oil should be used at less than 1% of the total weight of your carrier oils. Tea tree and rosemary at about .5%. Your recipe has really strong concentrations.

Tea tree is an anti-fungal and anti-septic but it is not a preservative.

@curlytee, thanks for the tips!

@madeaj, I too thought the 28 drops of EOs were a bit much! Thanks!

It was more 25 shea and 75 aloe as the aloe provides hold and shine for me.
