Her hair smells like Mildew!
I have looked and looked and looked to no avail! My god daughter is a teenager who is natural as of Fall 2010. She wets her hair and puts gel in it everyday. She doesn't co-wash often and shampoos about once a week. I noticed the other day that it doesn't smell very "fresh." In fact, it smells like a form of mildew. We oiled it, washed it, and conditioned it, but the smell is still lightly present. Any suggestions on what to use to get it out? I know she doesn't want to go to school tomorrow smelling like a t-shirt that sat in the washer machine one day too long.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe a baking soda clarifying rinse would work. Baking sofa is a natural deodorizer.

I would toss the gel and give her a good ACV rinse.

Im sure this wont really help much but try washing again with warm water, condition and wash out with cold water then use 1/4 of a cup of apple cider vinegar to a cup of cold water. Maybe that will help the smell to neutralize.

teenager
Perhaps some of the odor could be due to hormonal changes and the composition of her perspiration.

If she is not giving her hair an opportunity to dry completely the buildup on her scalp could quickly develop an odor.
I suggest either finding products with tea tree oil ( Jason's or Trader Joe's) and adding a few drops of the oil to the water that she uses to wet her hair.

I think everyone's advice has been helpful about how to cure it. But my concern is, what exactly is causing the smell?
What gel is she using?

Her gel routine varies. However, after reading some of your posts to her she told me that this last week she wore her hair wet with gel in it twice. When I say wet, her hair was DRIPPING wet when she got to school and stayed that way until it slowly dried. I am thinking that was a key reason for the smell. I will also take yalls advice and do the ACV rinse.
Thanks oodles.

Re: Her hair smells like Mildew!
I know someone who does the same routine (washing and just putting in gel and pulling it back into a ponytail). Her hair smells like mildew as well. Not sure if your goddaughter is putting it back, but it's important that she let it dry properly.
Tea tree oil is good as Falcon has suggested because it has anti-bacterial properties. Amla powder is also good because it does the same thing. If the issue is because of sweat, hormonal changes then lavender or peppermint oil is also good. Remember that these 2 oils should be mixed with a carrier (EVOO, EVCO, etc or water and shouldn't be applied directly to the scalp). Hope this helps!

A loooooong time ago, this happened to me. Depending on the length and thickness of your daughter's hair, it probably takes a long time to dry. She isn't giving her hair a chance to fully dry.
Does she wrap her hair at night? This will contribute to this.
