Nigerian/African Diet and weight loss Empty Nigerian/African Diet and weight loss

I've been thinking about this for a while and thought maybe, just maybe there might be other African ladies who have the same problem. How do you know how much a serving of stew is, or what the calorie count is when it's pretty much a mismash of many ingredients or for Gari, pounded yam etc confused .. I have a very big feeling that just eating till I get full is very decieving and might be the reason why I have had such a hard time dropping these 20lbs. And yes, I workout! Crying or Very sad

Try this recipe calculator on sparkpeople.com. The next time you cook you can put in what you usually cook, but measure the ingredients with measuring cups and spoons so you know exactly how much you are putting in. Then put it all in this recipe calculator, and say how many servings you think the entire pot of stew should make the way you usually eat it and then you will see how many calories each serving has. I don't cook african, but I use this method and it helps! Weight watchers also has a recipe builder but it isn't free.

I love sparkpeople. This sounds like a good idea. It will take some work as I cook without a recipie and taste as I go along but it just might be what I have to do. Afterall, it takes a measure of hardwork to achieve great results. Thanks girl!

I'm west-indian and I often wondered how to count calories for our traditional/cultural meals as well. Thanks for that link! I'm not good with measuring (just throw stuff together!), but it does give me a better idea of the calories, carbs, sodium, etc... content in my food.
